I'm really interested in how we pitch this series. We can't throw just anyone though... they swept a midweek series vs Miami

I'd just as soon hope we have some rain and lose one of these games.

Any word on starters?

Miami is not 1985 Miami. They have a losing record right now and could very well miss the postseason.

We really don't have a choice but to throw just anyone.

I don't know what we'll do as far as starting- probably Ashcraft or McQuary if I had to guess. We might see Billingsley back too. The bad thing is I think we're going to have to throw our big guns out of the bullpen at least one inning apiece just to get through- Barton, Self, and Price. Although I would avoid Price as much as possible midweek. Cole Gordon is starting to enter big gun territory as well.

Lose one of these games? In what world would that help?

I bet Jolly and Ashcraft get the starts.

I think he meant lose the game off the schedule, not actually lose to FIU.

I wonder if Cannizarro could talk the FIU coach into a DH tomorrow instead of playing on Wednesday (maybe under the premise of bad weather coming). That would help a little bit.

Two 7 inning games would be great

i looked at FIU stats and they may be in equal pitching trouble. They swept Miami while using their #1 starter, #2 starter, and their conference pen. They can't throw that personnel against us on Tuesday and Wednesday night. Looking at their numbers, they need 7/8 arms per weekend and they have a big road series in Hattiesburg after us.

They only have 11 pitchers with stats, so that leaves 3/4 spare arms to throw against us.

Of course, if they score 10-12 runs against the back-end of our pitching staff, they could still win. Bottom line, both teams would rather play just 1 game.

Maybe MSU and FIU can mutually agree to re-enact the sprinkler scene in Bull Durham for the Weds game as long as we give them their money. Seems fair to me and they would probably agree to it.

With our high rpi and it being a road series, no way FIU agrees to that.

Here are the arms I consider available for more than 1 inning, with total number of pitches last weekend in parentheses.

Plumlee (27)
Gordon (23)
McQuary *(57)
Barlow (0)
Billingsley (injured?) (0)
Mahoney (0)
Jolly (2)
Ford (0)

Here is what I would do:

Start Plumlee tonight on a 70 pitch max and start him on Sunday. Start Mangum on Saturday with a full week's rest, and that gives Plumlee 5 days of rest.

Then, you just hope that Barlow, Mahoney, Jolly, and Ford can eat a bunch of innings the rest of the series.

Looks like Ashcraft is going to start tonight, per Twitter.

I think these are games where we have to get someone out of Mahoney and Ford. Parker Ford is talented, but he's still getting over the mental aspect of his injury and has not recorded an out yet. We need to see if Barlow can do more than be a left handed specialist out of the pen.

I would try to keep from using McQuary till the Wednesday game. Hopefully, we don't have to use Self at all.

I hope Self and Price are shut down until the weekend. This week we will find out who else has a chance to pitch because we have a lot of opportunities.

Or plumlee... I think his days of being a weekend starter are nearing an end.

Should make for a lot of offensive fireworks if FIU's pitching is in the same boat we are.

Got to give him another shot. Tenn isn't good, but he shut them down.

For whatever reason, he seems to be having much more success in home games versus away games.
