View Full Version : RB's and a few questions

Clearly we have our starting RB in Aeris and that is not debatable. That being said, where does Nick Gibson fit into our RB rotation? He's a similar player, similar size, as Aeris, so I don't see Dan using him as a "change of pace". In fact, I actually see Mixon as our "change of pace" guy on speed sweeps, etc. I even think we may go bigger for a change of pace this year at times by throwing Lee or Murphy in there for a few plays. So how do we utilize a really good back like Gibson? I'd love to see us put Aeris & Gibson in a diamond formation with Fitz, but that horse was beaten to death the last few years and clearly ain't happening.

Also, where do you see Kylin fitting in year 1? Just special teams, or will he get some RB snaps?

RB is probably as talented and deep as it's been in years, so I'm just curious how we incorporate and best utilize all of that talent. It's a good problem to have imo.

I too anticipated mixon getting a good many carries this year, but I wonder if dear's injury changes that. Can't afford to lose mixon

Aeris & Nick aren't similar. Aeris is almost 225 workhorse back that gets stronger as the game goes. Nick is around 200-205 with more wiggle & slashing ability. I expect Nick to be the #2 guy.

Hill is going to redshirt unless we part ways with DLee. There are no carries for him to be had unless someone gets hurt

Plus we all know it takes a year to learn how to pass block anyway

Who says D Lee is getting carries? That hasn't happened in his career

Which is really my point. The 3rd guy isn't going to get reps- let alone the 4th guy

Don't need a change of pace. Just need two good backs to carry the rock. That's my hope for Aeris and Gibson.

2 - 3 years is more accurate assessment.

Hill will not redshirt. He will play on special teams and has a chance to compete with Nick Gibson for the #2 role behind Aeris. Dontavian Lee and Alec Murphy will likely play the FB role long term in the offense.

People said that about Aeris too. Until the TB learns the offense and pass blocks- they aren't going to play. We've had 1 true freshman play RB under Mullen in 8 years- Shumpert. Why? Because he has been the best blocking RB we have had

Don't be surprised if you see 1, maybe 2 RBs (probably just 1) leave after spring.

I would not be surprised at all if Kylin Hill and Aeris are the feature backs this year. Hill is that good. Nick is in a big "show me" season. I know he was 'blocked' by Shumpert and Holloway, but he should have been able to get more than 3 carries. He could get squeezed out again. Hill is very similar to Josh Robinson in running style

Hill is set to redshirt. Barring the loss of 2 RBs, he's not likely to do more than scout team duties. He's the future and we aren't going to waste him on special teams.

Hes better than that and he's ready. I guess we will see. He is rocked up already at 215lbs+

Can he pick up the blitz against SEC LBs? THAT is what will determine if he plays that much or not. Unless Mullen relaxes his standards for RBs.

Nick is supposedly up to 215 according to himself and others around the team. That's the reason I was asking.

Gotcha still think he & Aeris compliment each other pretty well.

This all day. Until he knows the pass protections and blocks- he won't see the field

I understand (historically) why you say that, but I'm telling you, Kylin Hill has a higher ceiling than all our current backs. Hell, JRob was the worst blocker we've ever thrown out there and he rarely left the field.

I say start with one and run him until his tongue dragged the ground then put in the next one until his tongue drags the ground and so on.

JRob also RS'ed because of it and didn't see the field much as a R-Fr or Soph because he wouldn't block. And he had NFL talent

I agree that Hill is very talented. Aeris was too coming out of HS. Until Hill learns to block- he won't sniff the field. We go thru this same convo every time we sign a RB

It probably doesn't matter if Hill is the best RB we've ever had, if he can't pass block, he'll never play under Mullen.

I'm going to rename the RB position under Mullen, effective immediately, - Pass Block Specialist, or PBS.

IF JRob had NFL talent he would be on a team. Best he will be in the NFL is a practice squad player. He doesn't nor has he had the right "mind set" to be a Pro player. Way too many issues.

That's great haha

For a team with a rather small assortment of passing plays, we sure do act like we need the Great Wall of China as a pass blocking running back.

Ok, my bad, one year. He listened to the wrong folks RP, I know a few folks that know his situation or knew his situation.

I surely wished the best for him especially from his background, his time has passed I'm afraid.

I have talked to a former running back about our protections. He broke one of them down to me and my head was spinning on what all the running back has to read. And he said there were 21 more of those

So was Holloway an anomaly (in terms of PT) or a really good PBS? I don't think we will ever know.

On Hill, either force feed him carries or redshirt him but I don't see the point of wasting a year sending him down on kickoffs.
