Looked at the SEC stats for the first time tonight. Nothing that really surprised me, but interesting nonetheless. I am very pleased with our success and aggressiveness on the bases. Here are a few of the highs & lows:

Walks allowed have killed us in a lot of the close games we've lost. Interesting to see that we are the worst in the SEC in that category. And that doesn't even count a high number of batters that we've hit in key situations. Heck, we hit 2 guys today in the 9th inning with a 4 run lead. If we could just get some guys to throw strikes it would really help the effectiveness of our bullpen.

Or maybe have Cann take them out before they allow the first 4-5 hitters to reach it would help out immensely. It's hard for me to blame the pitchers when it's clear to everyone and their mother that a guy is done- except apparently our pitching coach.

It may be an oversimplification, but the aim small miss small mentality is something I subscribe to, especially with my high schoolers. When we walk guys, many times we aren't even close. If you get two outs and walk a guy, that's 100% mental. Those kinds of things come from lack of a mental approach.

Got to give kids cues on things to use on the mound. We don't seem to aim small and even on strikes tend to miss targets. The pitching problem can very easily be attributed to youth and to me that's a valid argument. But now that we are down guys and young ones have to step in, we need to do a better job of mental prep.

ERA is a little deceiving. Take out breaux, ford, and smith, who were obviously hurt and shouldn't have been pitching and our team era is 3.38 (47 ER in 125 ip). They also contributed to 9 of our 65 walks.

Eh, that doesn't explain that level of walks allowed. There aren't many of our pitchers who have thrown strikes consistently. If you take somebody out, generally you're putting someone else in who doesn't throw strikes.

I didn't suggest that it did. However, it probably affects our team ERA a good bit. Especially if you add in Blake Smith's meltdown against Morehead State, the 6 runs Kale Breaux allowed, and then you add in times like yesterday where he left Barlow in too long which let South Alabama add another two runs- all of those add up.

That stat is the equivalent of time of possession in football in terms of value.

But how many arms do we have that we trust out there? My point is that when you can name so many pitchers who have struggled, that in and of itself is a problem that there's no easy answer for. You can say we should have taken guys out sooner, but there's a decent chance the guys we brought in would have struggled as well, and then you're just burning arms.

Overrated?

I'm not a believer in TOP meaning much, especially in the current climate.

I agree with this. We have come to the point of Cann is going to have to trust some guys to work out of jams and hope for the best. I would have pulled Mangum yesterday but not sure we had anyone left that wasn't going to pitch the next game. Luckily Mangum did just enough to get out of it and had enough cushion to get the save.

Based on who we are pitching today apparently there was really, truly nobody left to finish yesterday other than Mangum. Self and Rigby haven't pitched today either so not sure what is going on with them.

Is Rigby completely healthy? Having that groin pull or whatever could be something they have to watch the whole year with the amount of pitchers we now have.

Rigby's injured, right? My guess is that Self will be starting this weekend. He should be, at least.

The fact that self didn't pitch is concerning. Why would you hold him out of he's not hurt or something going on?? There's something to it.

He may be pitching tomorrow as well.

Could be. I'd hate to lose one of our best weekend relievers to midweek starter though. Well I guess it would be ok if we limit midweek pitches
