5/6 from the free throw line for Alabama (a 65% Free throw shooting team). Taylor who is a 40% free throw shooter is 3/4. They do things against us they don't do against other teams.

Alabama has our number. They're bigger, drive the lane, and we are a foul happy bunch.

This is our third time playing, and it looks very similar to the first two times so far.

We are outmanned down low....ADO and Brooks can't get here soon enough.... also we haven't figured out how to defend the high screen and roll from the last time we played them....

They play a ball that forces the refs to call fouls. When the refs don't call fouls, it's hard to beat a team like that. Johnson is not a dumb coach. He knows this is the only way he can win. We are a team made of mostly freshmen so we haven't been developed in the weight room yet. Alabama isn't going to play this style next year which will work to our advantage. The worst game in the whole tournament may be the game tomorrow if we can't come back South Carolina and Alabama.

Irondawg

The difference between the two teams is this to me (1) They play much better team defense and (2) They understand how to work for a good shot. They are limited offensively on talent, but they don't totally waste a lot of possessions like we do.

We take a lot of wild shot and everytime one of our guys touch the ball they're looking for their own shot instead of rotating it quickly.

Growing pains.

Funny that you mention Auburn who swept Alabama. Nick Weatherspoon will be a huge improvement from Ready and we will have everyone back plus Ado and Brooks to help the front court issues. Saying you have given up on next year because we are playing poorly to a team that has better physicality this year is just plain stupid.

Lol, you fans are comical. I wouldn't trade positions with anyone in the SEC going forward. They get two good shooting guard pieces but who replaces the 30 year old in the middle? They don't have studs coming in the post. We will actually match them pretty good next year and will have more talent then them. They won't be playing this style either. They will be pushing the ball more and will find out that playing that way actually will play into the hands of teams like us and Auburn. It will be fun the next couple of years.

Where did I say I've given up? Just bc I don't think we're gonna be better than bama doesn't mean I don't think we'll be good. They've signed the #7 overall player in the country and beat Kentucky for a SG.

It's frustrating watch how much better coached Alabama is playing. My biggest beef with Howland this year is he couldn't get the guys to play anywhere near the defensive level necessary to consistently win.

Bama isn't giving us any open 3's as they are fighting through screens and closing out quickly. We're not moving the ball quick enough to counter that.

Our ceiling is higher than Bama's but their floor is way higher than ours and everytime we play them we play at our floor and they play at their ceiling. They are too big and physical for all of our freshman and they confuse us when we are on offense into playing hero ball instead of team ball.

MarketingBully
03-09-2017, 04:41 PM
When you let a team like Alabama get away with fouling like these officials have it makes it hard to beat them. South Carolina does the same thing. We are obviously very flustered from this shit and that is why we are playing like shit. The refs set the tone early and it is hard to over come it. Alabama is literally fouling every offensive possession we have had. This type of basketball they were supposed to get rid of but yet here we are.

Next year will be the barometer. That being said... it's very disheartening and worrisome that some of the same technical issues have persisted under Howland. More than anything, the team chooses when it wants to get effort instead of all the time. Doesn't feel like he has much control of them. Like I said, I personally won't make a judgment until next season. But this season and Ben Howland have been a disappointment thus far.

Sure you could say that. I was disappointed with the way this season went. But we got the two wins we needed to at least finish .500. Alabama is just a bad match up for us this year and when refs don't call fouls on them like they did in the first half we didn't stand a chance.

I stated yesterday that this team now had a year under their belt and I didn't see a team identity. I said that I hoped they would be a year better, not just a year older and some of you jumped on my thoughts. I just walked in from work and same old, same old. Maybe Ado, Nick, and Brooks will bring what we need, along with some processing if necessary. Wait Till Next Year (infamous State battle cry for us older dawgs.)

IF HOWLAND DOESN'T WANT TO BE HERE COACHING... LET HIS NON COACHING A$$ GO TO...

Go to Where?

You're asking for toughness with a frontline of Herard and Holman. Don't worry though because next year we get Ado and Brooks who are toughness type players this team is desperately needing. Guess who else has a lot of toughness? Nick Weatherspoon. We will be fine.

You don't have to be big to be tough

I am waiting to be impressed with Howland... Maybe next year.

We need two things: Experience and more true bigs. When we get that I think it's going to be fun again.

Next year is the year, or so I've been told.

That's cause everyone keeps telling him he's a stretch 4 when he's really a broke 4

I agree. Regardless of IYOK says, my eyes see the same thing you see - a lanky 4 with a broke shot trying to be Klay Thompson. Holman may have a pretty rotation and good form, but the ball doesn't go in the hoop.

We need FOUR things: Experience, more buckets, less other team buckets, and more true bigs. When we get that I think it's going to be fun again.

With experience and more true bigs the other two will take care of themselves. I wouldn't get too hyped about next year either for what it's worth. Bigs take time to really develop. I think we will be better but the NCAA tourney may be a stretch. A lot of y'all underestimated just how far whe had fallen.

Here's a thought for Coach Howland. Play ****ing zone when you play teams like Alabama and South Carolina who can't hit for shit and play defense like they do. Playing man against Alabama and South Carolina is dumb as shit unless you are a team like Kentucky that can just out talent every position with 5 stars. They must have had a bazillion layups and and 1s against us because we are not a great man to man defense. If there is one huge flaw Coach Howland has it is he stubbornly only plays man defense which is not easy to learn for a bunch of freshmen.

After looking at the stats, I am convinced that the X-factor for beating them today would have been playing zone. They were able to get their offense going basically just driving to the basket all night through penetration from Ingram. A zone stops that and forces them to pass around the perimeter to look for holes in the zone. It also would have stopped our dumb fouls from being out of position on them driving to the basket. We need to pick up an assistant who is an expert at the zone IMO since Howland doesn't have confidence in himself to teach it. In this day and age of basketball and the refs, you can't just be so stubborn to only play man. I am convinced that had we played zone some this year we probably have a few more wins. I just think it's very very hard for freshmen to pick up all the nuances that man to man concepts bring and I think young teams struggle to implement it. Hopefully next year our guys will understand what it takes to put a great man to man together.
