So Plumlee is on the hill for us today. Anyone want to take a crack at the lineup? Much easier with Canny than Cohen. Will we be facing a RHP or LHP today?

msstate7

Mcnamee in for blaylock or Poole, Gordon for brown, and lovelady for Skelton... brown may play OF with blaylock and Poole out of lineup

TNDawg35

Id have Gordon, Poole, and Blaylockl on the bench. Let Brown, McNamee, and Vansau play...

I was thinking about that earlier....what if Brown went to RF and Rooker to 1B (if he can). Then we could do something like...

Mangum CF
Alexander 3B
Gridley SS
Rooker 1B
Brown RF
McNamee LF
Vansau DH (play matchups with DH all day)
Skelton C
Stovall 2B

Or hell, put Stovall at catcher to get better bats in the lineup

Mangum
LA
Grid
Rooker 1B
Brown 2B
McNamee LF
Vansau DH
Poole/Blaylock RF
Stovall C

That would eliminate our auto out at catcher at least, and be a much better offensive lineup

msstate7

Watching TT vs OM right now and it's actually making me feel better about us. Gingery is the TT pitcher that beat us opening day and he's mowing down OM... 5.0 ip 0 er

Rooker would a be a great 1B. I wonder if he has ever played there?

I really like pilk and plumlee. If ashcraft can have a solid freshman campaign, we have a chance to be decent pitching wise assuming a couple guys step up in the pen to go along with self and rigby

I wouldn't mind seeing us give Self a shot at starter. Would give us a closer in Ashcraft, and we'd have Cyr, Rigby, Price, and Barton as well. And I still think Parker Ford will get better as the year goes on and his arm gets back to 100%, so he could help us down the stretch too. I like that we have Sunday options in Cyr, Ashcraft, & potentially Self...just gotta see who grabs it and what makes most sense

Which is one of the reasons I hate Stovall hitting 9th. Stovall will get the majority of his ABs with no one on and an out or 2.

The last few at bats from LA, you could move Stovall to the 2 spot and have Mangum, Stovall, Gridley (which i still dont like), Rook, McNamee, LA, Skelton, Brown, Blaylock....

Need Ashcraft to show he can be the sunday guy. We've got some mid relief pieces just got to get roles straight. Getting Rigby healthy is do or die for us. Mcquarry, Self and Price are really stepping up. If we can add Rigby to that we would have 4 good pieces. Not having a lefty out of the pen is really going to hurt us though.

When Stovall gets back, I'd go...

Mangum -- cf
Stovall -- 2b
Rooker -- rf
Alexander -- 3b
Gridley -- SS
Bragg -- dh
Mcnamee -- LF
Cole -- 1b
Lovelady/Skelton -- c

Not ideal defensively in the outfield, but we need some depth to our lineup

Need Ashcraft to show he can be the sunday guy. We've got some mid relief pieces just got to get roles straight. Getting Rigby healthy is do or die for us. Mcquarry, Self and Price are really stepping up. If we can add Rigby to that we would have 4 good pieces. Not having a lefty out of the pen is really going to hurt us though.

Good win today. Scrapping.

I agree. And as far as the LH pitching goes I'm a little surprised that we haven't seen Mangum pitch some. My guess is we won't see him do it this year. And don't forget Barton too- he has been solid for the most part. We might see Billingsley moved to the Sunday spot since he did a decent job against Morehead State in the midweek starter role.

Gordon also had a nice day I thought. Any chance we straight platoon Gordon and Bragg at 1b when Stovall gets back?

He did have the go ahead for us. Good to see that you're back off the ledge for now.

I still have major concerns for this team, but mcnamee and Bragg give me a little hope we can hit enough

Wait, I thought we suck balls and everybody wanted to have a rainout so we wouldn't lose two more games!!*****

Why are you worried about the hitting in the first place? We're ahead of where last year's team was at this point in that regard. Like I said last night- the guy that shut us down pitched for Team USA this summer. That happens to everyone sometimes when you face a big league prospect at this level even though he has struggled some. And that's really the only time that has happened to us this year. You can spout off about our competition that we have played this year- but last time I checked Texas Tech was a pretty good team. And in the games that we've blown this year against crappy mid majors it wasn't because we didn't hit the ball and score on them.

The only "major concern" this team has right now is the pitching staff and the fact that we have lost so many guys to Tommy John- probably more than some MLB organizations including their farm system this year. Even that looks like it's coming together and it's to the point where figuring out the Sunday guy is the "major concern".

Maybe you're right... I think our offensive output was a mirage. We've faced some really terrible teams...

Western Illinois = 0-9

Morehead state = 5-5 (3 wins vs swac schools and gave up 14 runs to Iowa and 20 to Louisville)

Indiana st = 5-5

Marist = 5-4

We've played 4 games vs P5 opponents with 1 against TT's 4th starter and we've scored 16 runs (4 per game). Throw out the 4th starter game va TT and we've scored 8 in 3 games (2.7 per game)

I think pitching will be better than hitting despite the TJ guys

In our 4 games vs P5 teams, we've struck out 49 times... 12.25 k's/game. Today was the first time we struck out less than 10 times and it was 9

Well then if you throw out all the girls I banged in college and right after that were drunk, or somewhat marginal in the Playboy model looks, then I really only had sex once!!

Yeah me too haha

Fair enough, don't throw out the 4th starter even though we won't see that guy on sec weekends and it's still 4 runs a game vs P5 teams. We've given up 15 runs in 4 games vs P5 teams, which is 3.75 runs a game. Vs P5 teams, our pitching has outperformed our hitting and I think that's how it will continue to be

So, since we're throwing out "Texas Tech's fourth starter" you're basing our "offensive woes"***** on how we did against two aces off of one of the top team's in America and against a guy that pitched for Team USA last year in our first game on the road and Oregon's number two starter? And here's the thing I HATE about statistics sometimes- it doesn't always tell the whole story- and that's the case in our loss against Texas Tech where we made some dumb mistakes running the bases that cost us some runs in our loss late in the game. That's on us- not the pitcher. And it also appears to be abnormal for us.

Everyone is always going to struggle against legit aces- that's why they're aces. Which is why it's so important to have one. The odds always favor pitching- which is why even Ted Williams as great as he was- was only able to get a hit successfully 40% of the time in his best season.

The other thing about it is against "terrible" competition we have pretty much lit up the scoreboard on every single one of them so far. Bad hitting team don't do that.

And I see that you are dwelling on how many times we've struck out- that doesn't matter as long as we're scoring runs. Right now we're right in the middle of the SEC in hitting at .298- and last year LSU did the exact same thing under Cannizaro and then around the middle of SEC play the light switch went on. The other thing is- we are third in the SEC in home runs and lead in stolen bases.

Fine. We'll be a .300 hitting team and lead the sec in HRs and SBs. Again, I hope you're right bc we'all certainly be a regional team if you are. I wonder why Cann felt the need to get some new bats in the lineup today of the sec's most potent offense

Because players go through slumps from time to time and you have to adjust the lineup and we're trying to figure out what our BEST lineup is. Because it's baseball. Everyone does that.

Shit- Kruger and Lowe were struggling around this time of the year and we had to go to Marrero for awhile at catcher because of it. By the end of the year they were two of our best hitters.

It's futile against him. We should just know our starting 9, where they will play and where they hit from day 1 and not change it. And our rotation and bullpen roles the same. So ****ing stupid and obtuse.
