We shouldn't lose guys from our own backyard too often to Saban IMO. But Bulovas isn't from Mississippi. I don't think there is any blame to any on our staff with this recruitment, from what I've read and pieced together.

It's just the reality of MSU recruiting against Saban.

Agree. What sucks here is that Bama didn't decide they wanted a kicker till now. If they could just send us a list of the 25 guys they want to sign in September, it would really help us out and signing the optimal 25 guys.

Yeah. I'd would have loved to have Bulovas but I'm not going to melt over losing a kicker when there are other capable ones out there. The frustrating thing is how fluid Bama's recruiting board is and how them deciding on a player late in the process screws us on usually one player per year.

While there is plenty to criticize with our recruiting efforts at times (and I do my share of criticizing), I just don't think this is one of them. Going head-to-head with Saban on an out-of-state kid is a losing proposition for us.

If we go to Iowa or Wyoming and recruit a 3* guy that could turn into an All-Pro LT if developed well and Saban comes in at the last minute, we'll lose.

ShotgunDawg
01-25-2017, 09:08 AM
What makes me laugh here and displays how the player acquisition structure of college football is terrible is that Saban probably can't pronounce this guy's name and has probably only spoken to him once or twice. While our coaches have been working this kid for a year.

Please don't do that. Those Max Prep numbers are wrong and he is an elite kicker with a strong leg. But it took a full offer from Bama to get him. He was signing with us otherwise and told multiple people and our staff that.

And no RP, our staff recruited him hard and well. We made a difficult choice to offer Day and lose another player (causing ensuing melt on the boards over it and second guessing our recruiting) to seal the deal. This one is not on us

This definitely wasn't from lack of effort on our part. It's the Saban Effect, just dang!

Contrary to popular opinion, we have not lost any recruits due to a lack of effort. That's made up BS by those who have an agenda to push. In most cases, we have been the first to show interest in recruits, and when they suddenly blow up and get interest from the blue bloods, they forget who was first and has spent the most time with them. It's hard to recruit against the mystique of Alabama. It's not a Saban effect. It's an Alabama effect.

Man kicking recruiting is as hard as OL. But Williams has the leg strength to be NFL elite but not near as polished or consistant yet. Dillard it more consistant but he won't be as strong. Both have D1 offers but to come in day one, Buvolus is the one you felt good about being able to do that. And we have a difficult descision if we should offer a scholarship or preferred walk-on to the back ups.

To me FG kicking in college is 80% about accuracy and maybe 20% about range. Give me a guy that is deadly accurate from 45 yards and in and I am fully satisfied. 11/25 is terrible unless he had a ton of kicks at 48+ yards.

Give me a guy with consistency, the heck with a booming leg. We supposedly had that with Bell but he couldn't find the goal posts if they had fell on his head. I wish we would go after the very best JUCO kicker we could find across the country. I agree to a certain extent. Consistency is very important. Guess I'm having '15 flashbacks of LSU. To me, if your coach thinks he can develop the big leg to be accurate, get the big leg. If he would rather have the guy who looks more consistent in the beginning, get him and try to develop leg strength. But no one will know if he is a clutch kicker till he runs out on Scott Field and drills one from 40+ in tight ballgames in the 4th quarter.

You BETTER get a kicker who has shown accuracy BEFORE he gets to campus. NOTHING this staff has ever done has remotely shown that we can "develop a big leg to be accurate". That ain't happening.

I'm just skeptical on how much accuracy can be taught. Its almost like trying to coach a basketball player at the college level how to be a consistent 3 point shooter. Yes, you can help a little but usually a guy who is not a good shooter doesn't just turn into a good shooter because he was coached. Its really more either a guy can do it or he can't.

So I guess blame it on the coach who's no longer there. Lol. He still came for his official this past weekend to Tech but who knows who dropped who in this deal.

Since the coaches can't comment we may never know but some have said that we told him we were moving on after having him here for the weekend and others have said he reaffirmed his commitment only to turn around 24 hours later and decommit. Either way I'm glad it worked out this way for Tech."

So apparently Bulovas does have a very strong leg but as a SR he was 7-14 of FGs with a long of 38 yards (per 247) and someone posted here that he was 11-25 in his HS career. Doesn't sound like any kind of sure kicker for the Fall of 2017. Still wish we would go the JUCO route.

Legit enough interest to snag him without a scholarship offer? If so, I think that is a win for us. Don't get me wrong I wish we could have snagged Bulovas. There is a reason he was an All American kicker, but this kid isn't too shabby either.

Bama fans on tRant saying he just committed to bama

Apparently the 'blueshirt' didn't bother him.

So Bulovas didn't have an official visit to Bama or an in-home visit from Bama coaches.

Saban simply placed the call and said Bama needed a BACKUP kicker this year and that was that.

Damn I hate Alabama.

Really Clark?

Actually it looks like he may have unofficially visited Bama Sunday after he left GT.

Right. So basically all the State media misinterpreted the Ga Tech decommitment, and perhaps Bulovas contributed to this with what he was saying to the coaches.

Day kicker/punter?

Day wasn't going to be the punter this year anyway. Logan Cooke is still here. Give Day the FG Kicker job & let him be a full time kicker. His last 2yrs he was 23/29 FG with a long of 51. He said when he committed that he would compete for the kicking job unless we got Bulovas.

Cool. Any chance he could kick and punt in '18? Has there been a dual CFB punt/kicker recently?

Seriously, there has to be a proven JUCO FG kicker out there we could go after and bring in to give us more options at the position.

Then there's not any reason for us to be melting about losing a kicker. It appears that Day may be just a good a kicker as punter. He can concentrate on kicking this fall and then punt after Logan leaves. Problem solved, we are good to go!

Auburn had one just a few years ago but his name escapes me.
