One thing is clear, a break up occurred somewhere. The question is though, did he break up with Hugh Freeze, Ole Miss, or both?
First of all, his personal ties with Ole Miss run deep.
-He played wide receiver at Ole Miss from 1996-2000 and graduated as Ole Miss's all time leader in career receptions and touchdowns.
-His brother, Ronnie Heard, also played football for Ole Miss from 1995-1999. Two years ago, Ronnie was hired at Ole Miss as the Assistant Director of Development for the UMAA Foundation, would be interesting to see if he still holds that job.
-His wife played volleyball at Ole Miss from 1997-2000.
-He coached at Ole Miss, his alma mater, from 2005-2006 and again from 2012-2016.
It's clear that he, as well people close to him, cared very much about Ole Miss, at least at some point in time.
Not only does he have personal ties to Ole Miss, but also to Hugh Freeze.
-Both Freeze(Assistant AD for External Affairs) and Heard(Offensive GA) were hired by Ole Miss for the first time in 2005. From the OM website "Heard returned to Ole Miss as an offensive graduate assistant in 2005-06, when he assisted in coaching the receivers and tight ends. He tutored future NFL players Mike Wallace, Shay Hodge, Marshay Green, Mike Espy and Taye Biddle."
-In 2006, while Freeze was the OM recruiting coordinator, Heard was hired away from OM by Western Michigan as a WR coach.
-In 2008, Freeze was hired by Lambuth University as the Head Coach. He brought in Grant Heard as the Offensive Coordinator. Both Heard and Freeze remained at Lambuth together until Freeze was hired as the Offensive Coordinator at Arkansas State in 2010. At Lambuth, Heard and Freeze had the #1 offense in the nation in 2009.
-In 2011, Freeze was promoted to Head Coach at Arkansas State and immediately hired Grant Heard as the Quarterback Coach. ASU's quarterback in 2011 set single season school records and was top 10 in offensive production.
-In 2012, Freeze was hired by Ole Miss as the Head Coach. He brought in Grant Heard to be the Wide Receivers coach and they both remained there until Heard just recently got the 17 out of Dodge.
-In summary, from the OM website: "A former Rebel player and graduate assistant, Heard is at his fourth stop with Freeze, having served as his quarterbacks coach and passing-game coordinator at Arkansas State, offensive coordinator at Lambuth and graduate assistant at Ole Miss."
It's clear that Hugh Freeze thought a lot of Grant Heard as a coach, and most likely as a person. Grant Heard is/was to Hugh Freeze as John Hevesy is to Dan Mullen, except for the fact that Heard is an elite recruiter and produces NFL talent at his position.
Now the question, who is he so pissed at?
-Did the Ole Miss powers that be(#Network) ask him to take blame for certain allegations found in the recent investigation reboot?
-Did Hugh Freeze ask him to take blame for certain allegations found in the recent investigation reboot?
-Did he think that he deserved the Offensive Coordinator job and OM wanted something sexier? He is certainly qualified, he had the #1 offense in the nation at Lambuth as Freeze's OC. He coached wide receivers with Freeze, which has been the strongest position for OM since either has been there. I wonder if he ever thought to himself if Freeze's offense was successful because of himself rather than Freeze. We wouldn't know because Heard has been there with Freeze every year he has been a head coach, which includes 3 different schools.
-Is he pissed because he was pushed out and Freeze wasn't? He played and set records there, Freeze didn't. He wasn't listed in the first NOA, Freeze was. Heard's position group has been the best group at Ole Miss every year he has been there. From OM website " In 2012, with many of the same faces at receiver as the previous year, Heard helped turn the Rebel offense around, improving the team?s passing average from 173.3 yards per game in 2011 to 249.9 in 2012."
Was he pushed out because of the NCAA? No, unless he got busted in the NOA #2. Was he pushed out for his coaching performance? Clearly not. So why was he pushed out?
It's undeniable that something happened here. Either a school he coached and played out for 12 years pushed him out as a scapegoat, or a coach that he coached under for over 10 years pushed him out as a scapegoat. If he is pissed at just Freeze, he will bury him but still try to protect Ole Miss, which would be tough. If he is pissed at Ole Miss, well then all bets are off. Either way, he would have to be veryyyyyy pissed at either Freeze or Ole Miss to rat on his, as well as his brother's, wife's and friends', alma mater.
If his brother isn't working for Ole Miss's athletic association anymore, we might be talking a family wide break up, which would make it easier for Grant Heard to be heard by the NCAA. I do know one thing, when someone threatens a man's current and future livelihood, he will do whatever it takes to protect and provide for his family. The fact that he sold everything red and blue does not look good for OM.
If the NCAA was in Bloomington talking to Heard, either they also saw that something obviously happened for someone with so many ties to Ole Miss and Freeze to jump ship so quickly, or Heard contacted them himself. With this type of thing, when you break up you're not getting back together, and it's clear that Heard was either broken up with or broke up with OM and/or Hugh Freeze. The worse the breakup, the worse the aftermath, hopefully this was a sloppy one.
