Just saw on ESPN that Michigan announces they will take their football team to Rome next year for their Spring Break week of spring practice. They say it will allow their players to explore international studies and opportunities. Funny how this happens less than a week after the "Harbaugh" rule was passed banning the American tour and camps. What a douche!

If I were a recruit, that could help convince me

How many football athletes give a shit about Rome? Or know that it's in South America?***

Yeah, maybe not. Michigan is a great program with a great coach though, so maybe a free trip to Rome puts Michigan over the top on a recruit that's 50/50.

I don't know why you'd hate harbaugh for sticking it to the NCAA. I love it, although I don't personally like harbaugh. If you can jam it in the NCAA's face in any way I'm a fan.

Nope I'm a state alum. I was cheering for State that game. However I pull for Michigan against everyone else.

I?m not really sure where Harbaugh is going with this. If I was going to Europe to find under the radar football prospects the best place to do so right now is probably England followed by maybe Germany or Sweden. He?s actually pretty close to Canada being in Michigan so they could probably use somewhere like Toronto to find some good under the radar football prospects.

Harbaugh never stopped being a dick. When he's done with football he could be he perfect spokesman for Viagra is Cialis.

He needs something that he thinks will be a competitive advantage. They have a competitive disadvantage as it.

This is my point. He's just being a dick at this point! Who gives a **** if your university will give your team a free trip to Rome and you can circumvent the rules by saying it is for the opportunity the kids can decide to pursue international studies? It's the fact he is trying to bend all of the rules that he can. Again, I guess I don't blame him but he is clouding the water and just being a dick!

Didn't our basketball team go to Italy this summer?

Didn't our basketball team go to Italy this summer?

Yeah- but that actually made sense. They played Italian basketball teams in a country where basketball is far more developed than football plus we have a ton of freshmen and it made sense to try to get them some playing time together. Going to Italy to practice football makes zero sense. As a fan, I do well to go to Starkville for SBW to watch us scrimmage especially when I know our spring game is basically going to be shown on a loop on SEC Network in between episodes of the Paul Finebaum Alabama hour. Much less go to Italy to watch them practice. There are zero football recruits there and if they pick someone up they are going to be incredibly raw, probably be somewhat difficult to get them qualified, and this just seems to be an expensive move by Michigan which makes zero sense other than Harbaugh wants to go to Italy to go to Italy.

I appreciate that he is aggressively creative.

I wish we had 1/10 his creativity. He recruits 24-7-365 in some fashion.

Can't be aggressively creative from the porch at Lake Oconoee though.

Doubt they're going to recruit Italian kids or get people like you to come watch them practice. It's a good opportunity to see another culture and country, like our kids got. And he can use it in pitches to recruits here. Don't see an issue with it.

Ha! I was kinda thinking something similar. I'm more concerned about whether Hev can groom us a center (or not) by next year.

Forget Rome. Mullen needs to come out and announce a trip too, but include amstradam and 5 other countries.

Or he's trying to find ways to reward his players and keep things fresh, like a good coach should. Who gives a rat's ass if he takes his team to Rome? No one cared when Freeze sent his rejects to the Caribbean.

Yes and there is an NCAA rule that says basketball teams can take and international tour in the summer once every three years. I suspect that every P5 school does this every third year.

I called this a year ago. I figured they'd do a 'training camp' in Hawaii since it would be easier because the kids wouldn't need passports. It's going to get more ludicrous before it goes back to normal.

To me it seems more like he is selling a European vacation as a means to benefit recruiting. I don't think anyone realistically expects him to be recruiting over there. Must be nice to have a bazillion dollars and be able to send a group of probably 200 people (including players, coaches, equipment managers, and trainers and not to mention all the football equipment) on a trip to Europe for a week. Thats probably gonna be over a million dollars just for airfare / hotel / meals for all involved. Then you add the cost for the equipment shipping / maintenance, etc. All out of the athletic department budget so kids can explore culture for a week. Smoke em if you got em I guess.

Look for a new rule to limit this in football real soon...

You think Nick Saban cares he's a dick? How about Belichick? All these guys care about is winning. They don't give a f*ck what anybody else thinks. Harbaugh doesn't give a shit what anyone thinks. He's doing everything he can to gain every competitive advantage he can. I applaud him for it.

^^^ Nailed it. Yes he's a dick, but he is the best at finding and capitalizing on loopholes in the rules. If only our coaches had half of his creativity and proactive recruiting mentality...
