View Full Version : Should we "claim" a football MNC?

I think Bama claims 15 including 1941 when they lost to us and Vandy. A former bama SID went back and reranked 1941 putting bama 1 and the university claimed it. Why don't we do the same, us claiming 1941 is more legit than bama claiming it. It would be awkward for a few years, but 10 years or so and it would accepted. We can get Steve Robertson to go back and rerank 1941 and we have our first MNC!

We should have done it a long time ago. Don't know why we didn't. I would be in favor of it

Hell yea! And see what we can do for the 1940 10-0-1 team as well.

Just read a bit on Wikipedia (so you know it's true), but it looks like Minnesota can rightly claim the title, if the AP meant then what it has for the past many years. Not sure we can legitimately claim it since we coudon't participate in bowls (supposedly because some airports and rail stations were closed due to the war) so Alabama and Tennessee went and both won. I think the bowls were meaningless in naming the campion then anyway. But we were ranked 16th nationally and they were both lower than us, and we won the conference. So no way Alabama has a legitimate claim to the championship.

Why not. I think there's only been 2 or 3 years Bama hasn't claimed a Natty. Even this past year there is probably some poll somewhere that ranked them #1 after NC game. So this will be one of their split championships.

Seriously, though, I'd like to see some objective analysis to rank teams through the years and see how it shakes out. Shirley, someone has done something recently along those lines.
I'd also like to know how many championships are claimed by multiple teams.

So if I counted correctly he only has Bammer at 10 NCs. Also doesn't have them in any of the dynasties (unless I missed something). You betta be careful dude ... showing that in Bammer country might get yore weed crop burnt up, yore trailer burnt down, and yore dog poisoned.

yeah it depends on "how" one counts them... Some titles were issued pre-bowls, some teams didn't go to bowls, etc...
regardless, I have Bammer's count somewhere between 10 and 874....

Back to the OP...
I absolutely think we should retroactively reward MNC to both the 1940 and 1941 teams. 1940 is almost as egregious as the 1941 team not getting a MNC. Tennessee won the SEC and finished ahead of us in the polls even though they had a worse overall W/L record at 10-1 vs. our 10-0-1. To be fair, they did win the SEC by virtue of going 5-0 vs. our 4-0-1 so at least that aspect of the view is a little more explainable than beating NC Alabama in 1941. The only other teams to go undefeated in 1940 were Stanford and Minnesota.
In 1941 the only undefeated teams were Minnesota again and Utah and 6-0-2 while we finished 8-1-1 with a road loss to #10 Duquesne and a tie to LSU.
