Note, I only looked at players that have stats after their injury. So that makes the selections biased. Note also that colleges do not advertise that a player got TJ'ed, so I did much cyber stalking to compile this list. The good news is that good players do make comebacks from this injury. Further, it makes me wonder about the nature of Jesse McCords injury and why he is now at Samford. Did he get a particularly debilitating type of TJ?

By the way, LSU and TCU have many TJs. The TCU coach believes the year-round nature of Southern Baseball causes the problem.

Tommy John surgery has come a long way. It sucks now- but 2019 we're going to have some pitchers that we didn't expect to be pitching for us that time which will actually potentially help bridge a gap between now and the incoming freshman class of 2018.

I think it's too soon to speak on McCord. Last year was his recovery year I believe so we'll see how he performs going forward. I know he and his family liked Butch a lot and he left around the same time that Butch did. We may have tried to put him on the Andrew Mahoney plan where he was to go to JUCO for a year and then come back but then Butch left. Also the 2015 team had some chemistry issues from losing- it wasn't a very fun season for all involved. That alone can cause attrition.

The one big thing in here is we definitely are seeing more and more of these type injuries earlier because of the travel ball, extended season with these kids starting at such an early age. Throw in the fact they are having them throw breaking pitches as well and you have the perfect scenario. When a kids body is still growing and developing it is bound to have injury with the wear and tear, and breaking pitches.

Interestingly enough the studies show that throwing breaking balls early doesn't cause as much damage as previously thought. It's more from overuse in travel ball.

What I found is that LSU and TCU seem to have little trouble transitioning TJs back to service in one season. This makes me very hopeful that 2018 could be a monster year for us. Given Cannazaro's connections and affiliations with these programs, i cant think of a better guy to have during this crisis.

Notable, Arkansas and Clemson seem to suck at TJ recovery. Player careers basically end at those places. TCU and LSU, on the other hand, the TJ is just a tragic red shirt year.

Is there any connection to specific doctors? Wondering if the relative success is due to who is performing those surgeries, rather than where they go to school.

It might be the rehab program more than the doctor. There was an orthopedic surgeon (I think it was the Andrews guy) that said he was seeing parents actually wanting their kid to have TJ surgery because they noticed that other players came back with extra velocity, and they wanted to go ahead and have it happen early rather than later. He was making the point that it wasn't the surgery and that if the kids wanted to do the grueling rehab program without the surgery they would get the same velocity gain and protection against injury.
