What's the deal with these guys (Austin, Gibson, Raucina)? In all the talk about our recruiting, or lack there of, I never hear these coaches mentioned. Are they more focused on identifying talent and targets, or actually involved in the Crootin? Regardless, they don't appear to have had much of an impact. What am I missing?

They've had a huge impact. It's not their job to close on recruits. They've been a huge help & need to hire a couple more.

IYOK or whomever can chime in but from my understanding one of their main roles is to help with connecting with HS and JUCO coaches and forming relationships to help recruit players. I think they help on campus a lot with OV's, camps, junior days, etc. as well.

That's good to hear. As an admittedly casual recruiting follower I can't say I've seen any fruits of their labor... maybe the Co-Lin connection with Gibson. What I'm getting at is the year doesn't seem that much different than the pre-recruiting specialist seasons. What's an example of where they've been a "huge help"? Without sounding like a smartass...

They can only get the kids interested in MSU & hand it off to the coaches. Pat & Rod had a major hand in getting the huge juco recruiting haul we just got. At the end of the day if we miss on a kid it's not a recruiting specialist fault blame the coaches. They're doing their job trust me.

The thing to remember with the recruiting specialists is because of NCAA rules, they can't go off campus and make visits even though they may be our best recruiters on the staff. That's our problem- the guys we send out to recruit aren't always our best recruiting guys so while Peterson/Austin/Gibson/Stopczynski etc. may get us to the plate, they can't swing the bat.

That's why I've advocated promoting guys like Peterson and Austin to the on the field coaching positions where while they may or may not be great technical coaches, they would help a lot in recruiting.

Edit to say that the other thing to remember is this is our first year with these analysts to we'll see what the actual haul is before we can accurately analyze their total impact. The JUCO haul was very good without question.

Sadly they cannot make fans understand the recruiting rankings are set by people who know exactly squat about actual talent and coachability and fit within a program.

And neither do the mental giants who pay for their services.

Great point! Rep given!
