FB roster update...

Counting the early enrollees, we have 70 players on scholarship for next season. We have 7 commits for a total of 77 committed scholarships. That leaves 8 open roster spots for new commits from now until signing day.

But here's the kicker, we will only have 10 scholarship seniors next year. We will have more attrition for sure, but we need to sign a full 25 next year so that's 15 spots that have to be created. Mullen doesn't love processing kids. That's my theory on why we may not use all of the available scholarships this year. We want Bulovas and Gay for sure. We need 2 more offensive linemen. But I think we may bank the other 4 scholarships and give them to walk-ons or to a guy like Timbs on a 1 year basis.

Well, we offered the preferred walk on to the long snapper, but I believe that should roll into just taking over an existing schollie with current long snapper.

Not sure if we've offered schollies to Boluvas yet. If not, I'm sure we would. After he visits GT we will get his decision.

If we are so fortunate to get Gay that is one.

Not sure we have a shot with Carty.

I think TBuck has a CB that may visit, if so maybe we beat out Oregon. That would be one.

Wish we could flip a WR we like. Maybe Bowie makes his visit this weekend. There's one more.

Yeah, and Reed is a sign and place at best, but he may be a decommit after this weekend. So we actually only have 6 committed signees right now. That is crazy. And Bulovas does have a scholarship offer.

Let me preface this by saying that this is not a "we didn't want Aaron Odom" post. He put up video game numbers last year, seemed to have a lot of potential...by all accounts, seemed really wanted by our coaches.

What this is meant to convey is a little bit of perspective and convey the larger picture of how coaches look at roster management.

After last night's news, we currently have 79 of our 85 scholarships accounted for or 93% (take T. Reed off there if you want to...it doesn't really hurt the argument). So, that is 93% of our roster filled with players that our coaches really like and feel good about.

So, what about the other 6-7 schollies? look at our target list right now, there is a lot of feast or famine...likely famine...left on it:

It is conceivable, if not likely that we get ZERO of these guys...that's your WORST case scenario...but is it truly the WORST CASE from a roster management perspective?

Of that 79, scholarships, we theoretically only have 11 scholarships available for next...assuming normal attrition...maybe 15-16 scholarships available for the 2018 class. You want to talk about a top-heavy, uneven roster.

Say we miss on all of the guys above, you're looking a still, on the small side 20(ish) scholarships available for the 18' class.

So going back to that list, what if we get 2 out of those 14 guys...that our coaches really like and feel good about...re-run those numbers for the 18' class again, and you're looking at an even smaller class. What if you get 3, 4, or even 5 or 6 of those guys?

Does it start to make the staff's "feast or famine" strategy start to make a little more sense with those last 6-7 scholarships?

Again, this is not to downplay the loss of Odom, as mentioned above, it truly is a loss...but, on days like today, this board really does need some perspective on where we truly stand if the "worst case scenario" happens, and we go 0-fer the rest of the way out.
