I'm not mad at all that we're going all-in on special teams.

Same here. I'm all for us getting these specialists. Goodness knows we need them.

I agree with 7. Special teams need to be special.

Here is more info on him...

Smith, Matthew "Smitty"
200
6' 1"
Smith has shown at multiple Kohl's events why his is deserving of a 5 star rating. During the Senior Challenge, he snapped the best overall football. He not only snapped well during charting but he also snapped well during the final film portion of camp. He has extremely good rotation and is consistently on target. Smith showed his athleticism by running a 4.83 second 40 yard dash as well as running a 4.4 in the pro agility. Smith has the ability and talent to play at any level and make an immediate impact.

No comment necessary. It's an important position. Probably the most taken-for-granted position on the football field.

I understand offering kicking specialists, but I was unaware that long snapping was a problem for us. So you guys would rather take a blue-chip long snapper than a low 3 star project at a position of need?

Honestly, yes. There are plenty of scholarships that ultimately go mostly wasted. If you are pretty sure this guy will fill a need for you for 4 years, why not?

This^^^ No one realizes how important that position is until it gets screwed up a couple of times and then everyone want's to know why you can't recruit a decent long snapper.

If they don't have 4*'s next to their name on 247 or Scout, they don't get talked about alot****

The greatest kickers/punters in the world don't amount to shit if the ball is rolled back to them or sails over their head.

when numbers are supposedly tight, it is strange offering a long snapper. Aaron Feld is the only time I can remember this happening and I gave Croom hell for it. This kid must be really special to offer a full ride not only as a snapper but someone who can get down the field and make a tackle on punt coverage.

When is the last time State had a problem with the snap on punts/kicks? I honestly can't remember.

Fwiw, ourlads lists our LS as Bradley hunter (senior). Perhaps Mullen sees a problem forthcoming

We lose our snapper this year. Walkons are added to scholarship anyway. He's a walkon that will be put on scholarship at some point.

I have read several times "the numbers are tight" on this and other boards. While we did fill a lot of spots with jucos I was under the impression that we had way more scholarships to offer this year than normal. Maybe I misunderstood.

If commits keep flipping numbers won't be tight. So I guess there's that.
