Yea, Day joked about in the 247 story, said they told some people they were brothers this weekend.

He's an Army AA and ranked the #10 punter in the country, but 24/7 has him ranked as a 2* at .7703. What's up with how punters are rated? The # 10 player at other positions is not a lower ranked 2 *. ??????

From Scout-
"Day is ranked as a five star punter by Kohl's kicking.... Noted kicking expert Chris Sailer ranks Day as the top punting prospct in the country for the 2017 signing class."

When it comes to kickers I trust Kohl's over any of the recruiting web sites. Of course the fact that the guy is an Army All-American tells me he is probably pretty legit and at least top five.

Also not a bad FG kicker. Went 11/13 this year with a long of 50.

Didn't Logan Cooke go to Kohl's?

When it comes to kickers I trust Kohl's..... So does almost every coaching staff in the country, since most don't have "kicking evaluator" guys.

In the video linked below he was kicking FGs off the ground from the 30, so about 47 yards.

Good deal. I'm always leary of HS kickers that kick off tee

If we can't flip the GT commit, does day potentially kick FGs next season?

Did we give him a firm offer or a gray shirt offer?

Smart decision. Need the GT commit now. Solidified defense with jucos and grantham. Now we got to solidify special teams

That's part of the draw to get Bulovas. These guys are very close & want to play together. This is a definite positive towards Bulovas.

Ok, good. Just weird that we were talking gray shirt Sunday morning and switched course Sunday afternoon.

In Dan's 8 years, a solid punter and FG kicker would have won us several more games.

I think that gray shirt talk was a little premature.

I was pretty surprised when Rosebowl was talking about that. It didn't make any sense to me since I'm sure he has other offers.

We've almost always had solid punting and punt coverage units under Mullen. Someone else may have the stats, but a lot of our punts in his tenure haven't been returnable.

The kid himself was the one said it.

It still didn't make any sense regardless of who the source was. Guys that take gray shirts are usually projects that really want to go to a particular school and have some upside and don't really have a lot of other great options. This guy had other legit D-I offers and is one of the best punters in the country. Why would we expect him to sit out essentially two years when he doesn't have to?

Plus if he's a package deal with the kicker I think that definitely comes into consideration as well. And two scholarships to make us potentially every solid on special teams the next 4-5 years is worth it in my opinion.

Obviously our coaches came to the correct decision though so it's all good in the end.

I think in the 2013 we had an issue with some punts getting blocked but that was due to protection issues than the punter himself. Overall, I think you are correct. Most of the special teams issues have been with placekicking where we have lacked range and at times accuracy. Kickoffs were a concern at one time but that has improved. I remember having some trouble with punt returner in 2014 but we figured it out eventually.

Punting is one of those things that goes unnoticed a lot of times unless you have a guy getting a lot of them returned for TD's or blocked a lot.

The gray shirt idea only made sense from the aspect that we know we aren't going to sign 25 and there is a 90% chance somebody leaves after spring and opens up a scholly. So the staff is probably trying to figure out 1-2 guys willing to play those odds
