I understand that sentiment, but really thought he could grow into a nice OLB for us. Never thought safety was his destination spot.

I mean, I'm like 99.9999% sure Avery wouldn't do it, but he could just enroll at MSU by the drop date next week, take redshirt year, & still have 4 years to play. (Actually this is interesting. Early Enrollees don't sign LOIs until Feb, so I'm really not sure what the ruling would be here.)

He was always going to redshirt at MSU anyway, so nothings really changed if he does in fact have a change of heart.

That being said though, if it were about coaches, I think Avery would have played for McGriff. So maybe he just really likes Louisville.

Louisville recruited him as a safety, and he really lacks the speed to play safety in the SEC. If Todd Grantham is hired, then Mississippi State will be running a true 3-4 defense and not the hybrid scheme they ran under Peter Sirmon with the hybrid safety/linebacker position (which is what CJ was recruited to play) and the hybrid outside linebacker/defensive end position. CJ Avery is not an outside linebacker in a true 3-4 scheme.
