Yeah but 3 years avg of $1.1 MIL per for a guy who hasn't been a DC for what? 20 years and never at D1 level is a lot. I think they over spent just to get him means a good bit where they are in the coaching world right now.

Oh it's crazy high, but I like they're willing to pay assistants. Of course, they probably have no leverage right now

The question is why would we. Why would we give a guy that hasn't been a DC in 20yrs & never in D1 a 7 figure deal? Why would we give a guy who's never been an OC in D1 a high 6 figure deal? I can tell you because that's the only way these 2 marginally qualified at best guys would take a job at this sinking ship. I bet you their contracts are guaranteed. When your options are Wesley McGriff or myself then you're going to have to overpay. McGriff made $500k at Auburn they doubled his salary when they were bidding against themselves because they had no choice.

Yeah, that dawned on me...

When we do prove to have the right guys though, we need to step up their pay... Brian Johnson is probably a good candidate for a raise and named OC imo

WHOA! STOP RIGHT THERE! Are you trying to tell me they tried to take OUR HC and make him their DC (which, sorry Dan, aint your strong suite) AND ask him take a pay cut?!! That's a NEW level of arrogance, even for them!

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha ha. They had to pay that guy a million to coach at Ole Miss!?!?!?!

Holy crap, this is hilarious. They had to break the bank for a guy that's NEVER called a defense.

Is guess he is worth it if he can do this:

New #OleMiss DC Wesley McGriff: "We’re going to run the defense that stops every offense that’s playing football in America.”

Yeah this guy seems like a brilliant DC in the making. Lol. I know that may be a sound bite and not what he really meant but WOW.

For perspective, they just paid a 26 year position coach a top 15 assistant salary in the nation. Absolutely insane but I'm sure he named his price. Desperation

That was my first thought seeing the disparity in levels of income between the two. And knowing they gonna need a new head coach soon. Hahaha. Maybe they plan on him being the placeholder till they can find one like you said. Secret deal for interim, just don't tell Bucky....***

Everyone should read this twice. It's absolutely insane. They just laid a lifelong position coach a MILLION to run their defense. He's top 15 nationally and never called a game. Unreal how quickly they've fallen. However, I suspect he can get half a million in he next 6 months before it hits the fan and he's either looking for new employment or running the entire team.

This^^^^^ I'm guessing they had to overpay just to get anyone to take the job based on their current trouble.

Here's current top 15 assistant salaries. Includes both offensive and defensive. I've updated these with recent hirings/firings, but could have missed some. Feel free to correct. Lulz.

More than that when you consider they had to go an extra year (3 year deal) at $1.2 MIL the last year. Honestly he should be at $1.5 MIL TOTAL for 2 years, tops. They are paying $3.3 MIL total. That's an absurd over pay to get someone of his caliber.

3 years at $1, $1.1, and $1.2 MIL per year.

Longo 2 year deal will make $600,000 and $700,000 per year.

As a coach on the field, they hired a better OC than DC by far

I think these hires are very telling of what is coming. They literally have to pay a career position coach top 15 money to get him to take it and then they had to hire an FCS OC. Very telling

What's going to happen when they have to fire Freeze and then hire new coordinators? They better hope that McGriff's buyout is pretty low.

Yep. This would be like us paying Melvin Smith a million to coach our defense.

Why buyout McGriff? Just bump him another $500,000 and name him HC to guide them through trouble times.

12-16-2016, 07:03 PM
Idiots. They should have hired a juco coach for little to nothing just to get them by. Next year is a wasted year anyway waiting on the NCAA hammer. A full cleansing is just a few months away......

Really Clark?
12-16-2016, 07:15 PM
Think about this. If this was normal times and they were throwing out a $1 MIL for DC instead of doubling McGriff they could have doubled Justin Wilcox at WI or Greg Schiano ($600,000), or could have made a legitimate bid for Leavitt ($511,500). That is how skewed their searches had to be to just get someone.
