We look manhandled sometimes. Have we regressed in that area?

Watching the cowboys game today, I couldn't help but notice how the pro-db's can and do knock down those big bruisers with the ball. They don't seem to get stiff-armed either. Sometimes they just grab the shoulders and ride em to the ground. Some times a solid cross block to the knees. If they get a stiff arm, they grab it and drag them down or wait for help. Don't think our guys are strong enough or tough enough to do those things.

Looks obvious

It's three man front. The two guards are free to do what they want. You are negating at lest three yards every down running between guard and center. The 3-4 sucks. Why run it?

I know that when Mullen was first hired, he said his most important hire was his strength and conditioning coach. So i was a little surprised/disappointed that we didn't have a national search last year.

Another lazy hire by Mullen

Success breeds complacency. Complacency breeds failure.

good topic for discussion, especially from those who've played the game. sounds like Jack knows what he's talking about. are there any successful D's running the 3-4?

Several teams, just not what we need at MSU.

you can't argue with bamer's D. it is totally bad ass. I guess if you have elite players, that's the way to go. sounds like we may be trying to plug square pegs into round holes with the 3-4

Scheme changes are usually 3 years minimum. We've got pieces that fit. Simmons, Leo, Green, and Spencer fit just fine. But Richie has played in a 4-3 for 4 years and is having trouble adjusting. Gray doesn't fit because he's too small.

We've got a ways to go. We stayed 3-4 last night and we don't have the personnel to do that. You have to have aggressive corners that can play in man and shed blocks and ours can't do that. So you have to use it situationally. We have the personnel to be multiple, but we certainly can't stay in 3-4. Not sure why the hell we decided that was the best course of action but it got us beat.

If you have 2 players that require a double team then it's great, but we don't have those players. Especially at nose.

No team runs an3-4 or 4-3 in this day and age. They usually have a nickel package in 50% of the time. Bama runs nickel 50% of the time. The 3-4, 4-3 shit is just where they start form a base. People run bear fronts against run spreads as well.

Our problems are way bigger than some bullshit 3-4, 4-3 nonsense. We are soft. We aren't hard AND our scheme sucks.

We have one zero on this team and he's been getting blocked man up a good bit. Can't run a 3-4 that way.

However, our pass defense is the biggest problem this year IMO. Everyone is open and they have all day. We can't cover and we can't get pressure.

Does anyone know why we lost Balis? He seemed to be one of Mullen's country club boys at the beginning. The players seemed to always praise him for his results. Left to go to UConn. I can't imagine they threw a ton more money at him. I figure that is his home area and may have played a part. Anyone know?

We run as much 4-3 as we do anything. Our DC just sucks monkey balls.

Go hire the asst. S/C coach at LSU or Bama and call it a day. Both of those are top shelf programs.
