The wonderful years of Charlie Shira!!! He also lost to Houston 74-0....Jack got out the record books in the 1st quarter.

And what's sad is Shira had a better Egg Bowl record the past two years than Dan does. Including tying St. Archie in 1968.

1987 wasn't much better.

I understand people saying "it's been worse," but what I don't understand is people using that as an excuse to justify things now. We don't have to suck anymore. Mullen has proved that. He's raised the expectations around State and he has to live up to them first and foremost. Relentless effort. Every day. In every aspect of the game, including hiring assistants and recruiting.

Oh yeah? Well I think this season is unacceptable because in 1940 we went 10-0-1.

@Florida 27-7
ULL 20-0
@Auburn 7-7

@NC State 26-10
@Rhodes 13-0
@LSU 22-7
Millsaps 46-13
(11) OM 19-0
@(17) Alabama 13-0
(9) Georgetown 14-7

Wins against THREE ranked teams. Wins at LSU and Florida and Alabama. And some people on here dare to say we should lower our expectations.**

ETA: And we didn't get into a good old fashion Big 12 shootout with Samford!

Tommy Pharr was throwing the ball to Sammy Milner and David Smith. We had zero running game and a shitty defense.

I don't understand it either. We're talking about almost 50 years ago. Or as Houston Nutt would say fity.

I think some of our older fans just don't believe we could do better than we are now. Which I don't think is true at all. We were going to bowls with Relf as our QB and really 6-6 should be our floor and 10 wins should be our ceiling although I think Dak showed that if we can put together a good enough team at QB/RB and defense and a strong o-line we could conceivably even go undefeated during the regular season.

Milner had good size, Smith was exceptional as a receiver, they got open often. Tommy Pharr was a running QB his Freshmen and Sophomore year. Tommy Pharr be the most improved passer ever at Msu and maybe the Sec.

Was that back when we sold almost all of our home games so almost every game was a road game? There is a big difference between MSU now and back then. Our facilities and head coaching salary is on par with most in the top 25 now. I seriously doubt that was the case then. Most people just want the Relentless Effort in every aspect of the football program that was promised by Mullen. Does anyone think we have even seen Relentless Effort on the field every week? I doubt anyone thinks we have Relentless Effort in recruiting unless they just don't follow it very closely or actually look at the current roster.

6 home games in 2 seasons is pathetic, but it coincides with our scheduling history. There are numerous teams in the SEC that we didn't play in Starkville for decades. It's like we've been self-imposing NCAA restrictions for a century.

Didn't we play Bama in the state of Alabama for like 20 straight years? I think our "home games" were in Birmingham which is further from us than Tuscaloosa.

THIS!

The attitude here needs to change. You folks are basically saying "the flu isn't so bad this year...in 1918 it killed 100 million people, or 5% of the world's population". Really?

Things are better now. Expect more.

1962-1986 without playing an on campus home game and instances in the 40's and 50's of not leaving the state of Alabama...our home games were in Jackson. It's the same or worse against several other teams in the SEC.

Funny, a copy and paste about our record in 67 and 68 turns out to be so negative and taken the wrong way and blaming the fans of today.

Dan wants to set records at State. He hadn't come close to those 2 so he is giving relentless effort towards trying to set the record for most losses in a season. Looks like he's only going to tie it tho. He should've strained more.

Not sure who else on this board remembers suffering through the last 4 games of the 1986 season but I was a student then and still remember vividly the pounding we took in succession from Auburn, Bama, LSU and UNM. If you don't remember how bad it was go look it up. I am now prepared to relive that again this November.

Thanks tc, great read! Tommy Pharr was great! I remember in 1969 at Jackson Memorial Stadium playing a great Alabama team led by RB Johnny Musso Alabama great. Pharr played hurt and probably had no reason to play, I want to say he had a broken collarbone. He lit Bama up with great passing, close game as Musso was held in check for most of the game. Probably one of the gusty games ever played by a Msu outmanned team by far! Bear Bryant came into the dressing room after the game and gave a very emotional inspirational speech praising the effort. Msu lost the game.
Also Msu was famous for stealing The Bear's hat, it was displayed at the union after that game.

If you think I'm one who lives in the past then you are dead wrong.

I know you have high expectations and I think everyone should. The mantra I used to see on GP a lot of "get used to it" or "its ok, this is common" is what I was referring to. I haven't been on that site in 2-3 years probably and that's a big reason why.
