Stolen from Paul jones ( http://mississippistate.247sports.com/Bolt/Week-11-Mississippi-State-Commit-Schedule-and-Season-Stats-48542207 )...

Callaway High School (6-4) vs. Murrah High School - Callaway LB/DE Aaron Odom; season stats: 120 tackles, 27 tackles for loss, 23.5 sacks, six fumbles forced, four QB hurries, two PBUs and one fumble recovery for a touchdown. Also has a blocked field goal.

...

27 TFL, 23.5 sacks!!! This guy is a district with Madison central, Starkville, warren central, Clinton, northwest rankin, and others... very impressive. Could this kid be an immediate impact guy?

Impressive offers for a mid-3*

Here's hoping we land CJ Avery and some solid corners. The scheme sucks right now, but with the right players it may eventually work. (LOOKING AT YOU SIRMON)

That Huge monster D-Lineman from the coast (I forget his name) will be needed to play nose tackle and plug the middle when Nick James is gone.

James Jackson from Pascagoula. He will have a couple of years to develop because we have Simmons & Lee Autry playing NG also.

I think Simmons is out of position. He should be a 3 tech tackle in a 4-3 or a 3-4 DE.

They may not be exact but I know he's been hell on wheels this year. He's always had the talent but now his motor has caught up with his ability.

Until we improve the coaching, the effort, the learning curve, and the will to win, it won't matter much who we sign on defense.

Once I heard Sirmon was a 3-4 guy then I never really understood why Mullen hired him. I mean if you are going to change DCs every year at least keep the defensive players you have in the same scheme (which I like the 4-3 better anyway). I mean its bad enough to adjust to a new DC every spring much less for the players to have to adapt to a major scheme change on top of it.

I'm glad we've got him. He's a good prospect, I just expected him to dominate. All highlight video's look great though.

I don't know.....I wasn't WOWED by his highlight video. He was getting slid way outside by some OTs that shouldn't have done that to him. He has a bit of a motor, yes, but he also had some trouble committing on option as well as being a little hesitant at times.
He has some good things to work with, but he is raw...which is not unexpected being a MS HS player.

Has anyone ever run a successful 3-4 Defense in the college game? I want to hear one example of it ever being successful at the college level.

If I am crazy why have you been arguing with a crazy person for the last 8-10 years? Wouldn't it be crazy to argue with crazy? Think about that for a bit.

Do you think the 3-4 can work here? I don't think your examples are good. Michigan plays in a two team conference, UGA lost to Vandy and got boatraced by a 3-4 Um club (I think it was 24-0 after the 1st quarter) USC is down and gave up 52 to a Frosh in the opener, FSU hasn't given up less than 7 friggin points on any possession I've watched them play this season, and Louisville, well there is you're bastion of defense.

ETA: Louisville gave up 28 to Syracuse and Marshall.

I'm not knocking Sirmon bc I think he's smart and has a future but the 3-4 ain't for college football unless u got Bama talent in which case you can run a 3-8 if you want to.

All of the above teams have been 3-4s for at least 2 years. Here's each team's national ranking in total defense last season...

Bama #3
Michigan #4
Georgia #7
Louisville #18
Fsu #19
Stanford #43
USC #65

I'm not sure if we can be successful as a 3-4 or not. I like a 4-3 front better, but I'll give the 3-4 a chance

I was editing when you were replying but I hate not having four DL in this league.

Maybe the best hope for us turning into a successful 3-4 team is vandy. They certainly aren't more talented than us, but they've been a far superior defense lately
