View Full Version : Hilarious excerpt from Chad Kelly interview, "I play with a swag they've never seen"

I guess this was an arranged puff piece to do some damage control after his recent high school brawl episode.

http://mmqb.si.com/mmqb/2016/10/26/nfl-draft-2017-chad-kelly-ole-miss-quarterback-red-flags-field

In three months, the scrutiny will intensify for Kelly. It's a few minutes after that October press conference, when he had to explain his actions at his brother's high school game. We're sitting in a quiet room at the Ole Miss facility. I ask him to pretend it's a mock interview, that I'm a general manager and I want to know why my organization should draft him.

Kelly looks me in the eye: "I have it all. I might not have the same mojo as your basic quarterback, but I feel like I bring a different type of swag to the team and the players around me. I have friends all across that field. When I go out there on the field, I play with a different attitude that you usually don't see in a quarterback. I play with a swag they've never seen before."

And you know what the GM is going to ask next ...

"Off the field," Kelly says, not missing a beat. "Can we trust you?"

"I think you can," he says. "The decisions I made that resulted in bad things happening, I was thinking of other people and just trying to help other people before I thought of myself. Yeah, I took it upon myself to make decisions that, at the time, I thought were good ideas, but at the end of the day they only hurt me. Thinking of other people at that time, that's what got me in trouble. Now with social media and the media the way it is today, it's a totally different game than it was 30 years ago when my uncle played. You just gotta grow up."

Meanwhile the @nfldraftscout Twitter said that if he were an NFL GM, he would have stood up and walked out because of the comment.

It really boils down to this: he's dumber than a box of rocks with a substantial history of poor decisions.

I don't think he's a draftable player. No way I'd touch him in any round.

Same haircut as Henderson. Same school as Henderson. Started out at another school other than Ole Miss like Henderson. Throws the ball up for grabs and occasionally something good or very bad happens like Henderson. Will end up playing his sport in Iran like Henderson.

The funny thing to me is watching the preppy Ole Miss fans "Swag" it out in the stands in their bowties and blazers.

JFF will have way more success in the NFL and is more mature. Which is scary for society in general.

From the article, OM coaches say he's never been late to class or missed an assignment.

What courses is he taking? I can't believe he's doing his own work. Seems "developmentally challenged".

The interviewer says that Kelly looks him right in the eye and answers him. My question is which eye was swag using? The upper one or lower one?

I don't think he is either. I've never understood what his appeal was. He's had the benefit of receivers that have made some unreal catches to bail him out many times - and I mean catches that look like magic tricks. He comes across as a cocky little thug to me.

I was thinking the same. Dak is the darling of the NFL right now because of his play and his attitude/maturity. No way Kelley ever grows to the same level.

Not just because he's a liability off the field; I don't think he has NFL potential on the field either. I've been saying all year that it's obvious he can't read a defense to save his life. Show him something he isn't expecting, and he either throws up a jump ball or stands frozen in the pocket and gets sacked. Honestly it's pretty impressive that Freeze has kept him as effective as he's been.

He was just thinking of other people when he ran out on the field and joined in a brawl. No Chad, you weren't thinking of other people. You weren't even thinking. If your brother can't stand to be in an on-field shoving match then maybe football isn't the sport for him. He just needs to go join the tennis team. There are probably hundreds of fights and shoving matches every single weekend at high school games. Nobody gets hurt because they're all wearing helmets and most are broken up in about 10 seconds. No Chad, you saw someone push your brother and the thug came oozing out and you had to go in involve yourself in the middle of it. You're no better than one of those parents that punches the umpire at a little league game. What you should have done is sat your lazy eyed ass in the stands and let the officials sort it out while you tweeted porn stars.

I found this part interesting:

"And Kelly has found stability in Oxford. He’s become close friends with his roommate, Stringfellow, the receiver with a checkered past of his own. (He transferred to Ole Miss after being suspended from Washington’s program due to his involvement in two assaults during the aftermath of the Seattle Seahawks’ Super Bowl XLVIII victory. He pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree malicious mischief and was sentenced to work-crew duty and community service.) “We get along really well,” Kelly says. “We’ve both been in trouble before and we both know that we got a second chance, but we might not get a third.”

Funny that Stringfellow has already gotten at least a third chance with absolutely no consequences. Kelly too if you count his night club incident.

Man, I knew he was not the brightest crayon in the box, but that is Jameis Winston level articulation. It also wreaks of the bad arrogance. Not a quiet confidence but just arrogance. The kid has some tools for sure. But, I just don't see him making it. He has not been very impressive this year. If he didn't have so many physical receivers it would really be bad.

His idea of a good job interview for the NFL is to tell a GM that he has unlimited swag and that all his terrible decisions, like threatening to light up a club with an AK, have been a result of being too selfless?

Goodness, that is both a load of crap and way too honest at the same time. That would be one disastrous interview. 'My biggest weakness is that I'm too good a guy, I do too many things for other people. My biggest strength is that I ball hard 24/7, know what I'm sayin'?' Boom, hired on the spot.

6. After another confrontation, Dabo kicked him off.
7. Buddy Stephens gives him 6th chance and accepts him. He gets scholly to Ole Miss.
