I have an interesting theory. I think the media is just trying to build them up before the sanctions for an even better story. It'll be a much better story if a "contender" with a "class act" as a coach gets hammered and everyone is "shocked". We all know how the media loves to build something up so there is even more to tear down.

Two of the AP pollsters have them at #14. Unbelievable. I wonder if those two votes are what kept them in the T25.

The rankings are rigged anyway.

Why post rankings before the first game kicks off other than to prop conferences up to ensure a playoff spot?

It is a way to prevent the elite from being excluded. Notre Dame was ranked 10 and Georgia ranked 18. Those are some major whiffs.

Take a look for yourself and consider where how accurate they are at the halfway point in the season:
