Let's just assume Mullen and Sirmon are back next season... do we have a true NG on the roster or will we fill that position through recruiting this cycle? I really feel we need to get Simmons to de if we're gonna stick with the 3-4.

We need Simmons to play exactly like he is: At both DE & NG. Move him around to make it harder to gameplan him.

As for the pure NG, I don't really see one. Maybe Cory Thomas. Hell, we aren't even playing the true "0" NG enough that we have now in Nick James.

This is a great question Bc it is the key position in a 3-4 and the lack of it is killing us right now. Auburn realized and ran right at us with tight splits and our dl was on skates. Their backs were getting to second level untouched.

Auburn's 2 biggest rivals (bama and Georgia) are normally 2 of the best 3-4 defenses in the country. Auburn knows how to attack a 3-4 esp one that is just breaking it in.

James Jackson could be the guy we're looking to fill the position longterm. He's got great size for ng at 6'3" 345, but he isn't highly rated at all

Simmons is a very good NG and will be his position moving forward. He's not a DE. He can play Nose in a 3-4 or play the 3 as well as the 1-tech in a 4-3.

That's just it, they didn't have to schematically attack our 3-4 to whip us. They literally just ran a dive with tight splits all day. Until we find a dude at nose guard, we will struggle in a 3-4.

Can you tell if are trying to run a gap control defense out of our 3-4 as opposed to dl just taking up ol and letting our lb scrape? I honestly can't tell.

Simmons is the guy next year. This year it should be James, Adams, Simmons. I saw Torrey Dale out there at NT vs Auburn getting destroyed. Terrible spot to put him in.

Isn't he pretty prototypical size-wise for a 3-4 de?

Depends what you are looking to do in your 3-4. Some guys like that 330 lb rock that cant be moved- some want a 300 pounder with good feet that makes it tough on people inside because the Nose will slant and such. Depending on your scheme- Simmons can play either position

Looks more gap control to me. I need to watch more- but we dont seem to slant and pinch alot. Playing more 2 gap reads

Do you know what we're wanting out of that position?

Unless they slept through Signing Day this past Feb, they shouldn't be counting on anybody being a Dawg imo.

The real concern I have is how slow our team speed is on defense. How do we fix that besides liberal amounts of HGH?

The former reminds me of MT Cody... the later, D Payne....

That what ya mean?

To me, Simmons would be a much better 3 tech in a 4-3 than a NT in a 3-4. Have I mentioned I hate the 3-4 in college unless you are bama?
