Most of us have all seen this type of performance by the maroon & white more times than we want to remember. Coaching the Xs & Os plays a part but in reality our bed was made before the season started. Yes, I'm talking about recruiting.
To me, recruiting is obviously about talent but almost as equal is football character. Football character is the driving force behind the application of that talent. It is what motivates a player to play at the highest level for his talent and to demand excellence in his performance. When you sign a National LOI to play for a SEC school you should be willing to bring your A game. Nothing less will do. Do you think Saban accepts anything but the best from his players? That's what separated players like Dak from the rest of the pack, he always strived to be the best for himself and his teammates. Unfortunately, football character is an intangible that is difficult to gauge and can be a hit or miss. Miss State does not have a tradition of success and some players regardless of stars come here accepting the proposition that championship level play is not an inherent requirement and mediocrity is acceptable. What you saw on the field today was a mix of good & bad talent and hi & low character. We are missing the thread that binds it all together like a Dak but most importantly we seem to be missing a team IT factor that will drive and sustain success throughout a 12 game schedule.

Off soap box. .
