and fire up one of my favorite cigars? Can the police ticket you? Tell you to put it out? Throw you in jail? Escort you off campus? What happens if I'm puffing on a cigar and the PO-PO approach me? Any ideas? It's not against the law, just against MSU's policy.

That too...we're not the first school to do this, nor will we be the last. In reality, we're the last major school in the State of Mississippi to implement this policy. As the years go on, the policy will be stricter and stricter. It'll be less of a "hey...do you mind putting that out," and more of a, "If you don't put that out, I'm going to put it out for you."

I tried desperately to find a clip/gif from Police Academy 3, where Tackleberry asks a man in a non-smoking area to put out his cigar, then shoots it with a cross-bow pistol-when the man told him to piss off. Damn...

I'd just find somewhere to go where you won't be putting others in the way of 2nd hand smoke (but still on campus). Be courteous and don't smoke around other non-smokers, but smoke if you want to. That's just one non-smokers opinion.

As far as I can tell nothing will happen more than someone asking you to put it out. Just like a lot of no smoking policies there really isn't a penalty.
I used to smoke and I am proud that I quit but I think it is stupid to not have an area for people to smoke. Instead of having all the smokers in one area you will have them trying to sneak a smoke in various locations that may bother people. Just like when you make a hotel 100% smoke free you have a greater chance of getting a room that smells like smoke because there are no rooms reserved for smokers and the smokers just smoke in whatever room they get. Smokers are not going to spend all day on campus and not smoke.

I think the biggest effect of this rule will not be so much on tailgating, but smoking inside the stadium on the ramps and stairwells. Even as a smoker I never thought that was a fair policy because everyone has to walk right through the clouds when entering or leaving the stadium.

shannondawg

i single handley kept the Marlboro factory running the 3 rd shift. But I shed them 25 or so years ago, and am sympathetic with smokers. But after quitting I found out I was really allergic to the smoke, and just can't be around it. But I just leave or move if someone is smoking near me. I can't even go in a bar where they allow smoking, but I quit drinking as well, but thats another story.

I guarantee its a lot easier for me to move than for them to stop smoking..

I suppose you could tell them to go enforce something that's actually illegal on campus, such as alcohol use ... and particularly by those under 21. Smoking is not illegal (unless it's weed). I don't smoke ... but they should have designated areas for smoking.

I think I'd rather have somebody smoking than to have a drunk throwing up all over the place, or acting like drunks are wont to do.

I agree with this. Set up designated smoking areas (at least on game days).

At the end of the day, they can't actually do anything to alumni/visitors, so I wouldn't even worry about it. Like I said, just don't be an ass about it (intentionally smoking around people who don't want to be around it) (also, not directed at you).

I think this is for insurance benefit/savings, and my understanding is that it has to be 100 percent or no benefit. That's why they can't have designated smoking areas. I hate those Mf'ers wont't even let me vape. Damnit.

I don't smoke, but I'm a heck of a lot more upset seeing the mess left at the junction after a game (largely by students), than someone smoking a cigar. I wish our SA would concentrate on that real problem, rather than addressing non-issues.

The mess is generally cleaned up by the end of the next day. Doesn't make it ok, but it isn't like it sits there 24/7 after the first home football game.

While we're being progressive and shit, let's ban alcohol on campus. We'd be the first school in Mississippi to do it, it would reduce trash in the junction, prevent alcohol poisoning among young frat stars, and decrease liver disease and digestive organ cancers ten fold.

If I did smoke I wouldn't do it around people, and I was discreet about dipping. It's called courtesy. But this shit is getting ridiculous.

If I still dipped, I'd still do it, and they would never know if i was. And if they did, I'd still dip next game

I'm pretty sure it is banned. When he was governor, Haley signed something that let the local city and county laws govern alcohol on campus which meant all of our campus was wet for liquor and part of it was wet for beer. Not long afterwards a group of drunk students killed a cop at UNM when he got hung up on their mirror when they sped off during a traffic stop. When that happened, Haley rescinded what he had just signed and alcohol was again illegal on campus. I don't think anything has been passed since then making it legal. I could be wrong though.

You're exactly right. I'm currently trying to quit dipping but when I do I never spit on the ground or pull out a nasty spit bottle around people. If you smoke that's your own business. People just have to be courteous to others who don't like cigarette smoke.

Wait let me get this straight? Public university mostly paid for by public money, I.E. Taxpayer dollars, says the very persons who make the institution, cannot light up a cigarette? I don't smoke and don't like the smell, but I don't think I should tell someone they cannot do something they enjoy. Who are they harming but themselves? (Don't bring your stupid bullshit insubstantied second hand propaganda). It's false. Go piss up a rope. The PC police are taking over our once beloved university.

Here's an idea, how about we let the participants whom lay for something decide the agenda and policies, not what the f*ck some unsubstantiated half ass review/study says? Does that require too much thinking on our parts? If you can decide between regular and peanut M&M's you should be able to logically reason that people should be able to smoke in their own space without consequence.

You anti smoking brain dead oblivious backers, just you wait. Alcohol could be next. You all give these liberal, tell someone else what to do, agendas the befit of the doubt, thinking they'll never come for something I enjoy. That's where you are starkly wrong. Here's a little insight. They don't stop. Never stop. If you give a mouse a cookie, he's gonna want a glass of milk. If you give him a glass of milk, he's gonna ask for a straw to stir the milk. Look the book up and you'll see that these people are never satisfied.

ScoobaDawg

You are one closed minded ****ing idiot Rouge. There's a reason many places are adopting laws saying you can't smoke in certain places including within so many feet of doors and entryways.
Furthermore it's called common courtesy as others have noted. Why should I have to tell someone to put out a damn cancer stick when I want to breath air. They should go to a designated area so they can kill each other.
Furthermore if you really want to get into it... Talk about something with proven cancer connections and should be illegal... If not for big money donors.
