Simmons to me seem like an ideal DE in a 3-4. But I don't know if I can say the same for AJ Jefferson or Calvin. What do you guys think?

Here's an article about the 3-4 DE's from Sportsnation: http://www.boltsfromtheblue.com/2010/2/20/1318592/to-what-end-examining-the-3-4-de

I think A.J. fits into more of a hybrid scheme like Baltimore or New England

Aj will prob be ok at college level.

Heard Calvin was working some at viper

AJ is around 280lbs he should be ok at 3-4 DE.

Simmons is now over 300 lbs--he will be inside

Simmons is the prototype 3-4 DE. He's who the NFL would make if you could put 1 together in a lab.

Due to Simmons's strength, he can play all DL spots in 3-4

We should have been 3/4 base defense 3 years ago... We will help us get our best players on the field..
And Nick is the perfect 3/4 NG

Yeah, I like Nick at NG and I like Simmons at DE. I'm just not sure about the other DE spot and the backups.

Not a huge fan of Calvin at the viper. I like Green, Jung, Coleman, and Mullins much more at the viper. Calvin could be the casualty in the 3-4 as I think he is better suited as a 4-3 DE, but I'm sure the coaches will get him on the field.

Random statement. I'm not sure you are following the thread unless you are saying Simmons will be a NG which I don't think will be the case.

I can't wait to see the personnel groups that we put out there this year. We've got a lot of guys that can play multiple spots on the field and I just depends on matchups and opposing offenses as to what we do.

You'll definitely see a lot of 3-4, but I think you'll also see 4-3 and probably some 4-2-5 or even 3-3-5 to increase speed on the field.

you guys have to understand that you can roll some nasty looking fronts out of your base 3-4. i never liked it when i was coaching because i never had one solid NG, much less the two that you really need to legitimately have success with it. if you wanted to run a bigger package with that 3-4, you play an over/under scheme with a big 4-3 type DE as one of your OLBs. we have some seriously good talent for the coaches to play with at the OLB and DE positions. Honestly, the one spot that gives me pause is the NT depth. if Simmons or someone else ( or two) can come in and fill the needs behind James, then we are good to go. I want to see how Nick does there before i just declare him to be great there. It is very different going from a 1-tech DT to being a two-gap NT. I really hope he can fill both those holes, because if he does, there is a lot of pain coming from the outside !!

I'm pretty sure I read where one of our Coaches said Simmons could play some NT. Maybe I dreamed it.

I have no doubt he could hold his own at ng, but I don't want him just eating blocks. I want him making plays

Don't sleep on Cory Thomas at NG either.

I hope our NGs can be disruptive as well as being space eaters. Offenses hate pressure up the middle

Cory isn't working at NG.

In think we'll have a few growing pains, but man I'm excited to see it. I think we have the personell for it & hope we have that second NG spot on the roster.

Its just an interchangeable & versatile defense.

Of note, this author cherry picks a little. First off, this article was written in 2010. JJ Watt is a 3/4 DE & Bruce Smith was a 3/4 DE.

Here is a really good video by Wade Phillips that explains, in Lehman's terms, the responsibilities & type of players you want in the 3/4 scheme.

Would really appreciate if someone with further knowledge than is expressed here could tell me where the "Viper" position fits into this. Is he the Will?

Viper is the Sam in that video. Think of DeMarcus Ware when he was in Dallas. Think of Vonn Miller with Broncos. Also look at Terrell Suggs in Baltimore.
