Nick and Q Weatherspoon

For those that know more about projectability etc than I when it comes to basketball...Q is obviously a little bigger and I would guess would lean more towards a 2 guard. Whereas I am guessing Nick will be a pg. Watching clips of Nick their games seem somewhat similar in a lot of ways. Both are obviously very talented and athletic. As a finished product who projects better/has more upside? And how good is Nick? Does he have the ability to be as much of an immediate impact as Q was assuming we land him? About the only basketball I watch outside of the tourney is State basketball so I don't know a whole lot about it. Only played a couple of years at a small high school so I have a rather elementary knowledge about projection etc.

Also, as far as coming out of high school he doesn't have the length Malik did but from the untrained eye seems like just as strong of a prospect if not a little more polished. How far off base am I here? Strictly from a high school perspective, obviously there is a size difference was Malik originally recruited as a true PG or more of a 2/swing guard?

From what I know and have read about both, I would say Nick probably has the higher ceiling.

I see Q as a guy with fantastic instincts who does everything well and has surprising athleticism. I think Nick is more explosive and is a more natural fit at PG than Q is at any position.

Nick is a Top 25-30 prospect this year. His ceilings is a lottery pick so he definitely has the higher ceiling. He can have an immediate impact even though I don't think he starts unless he & Peters start together. Malik was recruited as a combo guard.

I'll take a 6'2 pg w/ explosive athleticism & an elite first step over a 6'4 sg with no explosiveness or elite traits.

Do you think North Carolina is his dream school or was it more of a dream offer he wanted to prove himself? Seems like they are the biggest threat, just wondering how uphill of a battle it will be.

Nick said the only school that is definitely getting a visit is Mississippi State. I know every pg howland signs is going to be deamed the next Russle Westbrook, but Nick is so explosive the comparison actually makes sense.

Battle won't be terribly hard. UNC already has 2 guards committed with another guard that looks like he is close to committing. I think the UNC offer was more of I have arrived offer than a dream offer. Kentucky would be his dream offer. MSU is the overwhelming favorite but he's giving everyone a fair shot to recruit him.

Thanks guys trying to get into this a little more. And my question on comparing him and Malik was more at the high school level before we knew Malik would struggle. It will be fun to watch this team develop and add talent. It is nice to see the basketball program on the right track. Basketball games were a close favorite of mine to go to before the Rick Ray debacle and I am looking forward to being competitive again. I don't see any reason we cant own the west in the next few years.

I would not expect Nick to have the impact that Q had. First, he will be surrounded by better players, and will have to be better than Q was to step into a leading role. Second, even if he does have more talent than Q, as much as college basketball is the place where true freshmen can make an immediate impact, it's still a vanishingly small number of players that basically immediately adjust to the college game, and most of those players are really only to do it because they have superior athleticism to rely on. If Nick turns out to be like Q in that respect, it will be awesome, but I wouldn't put those expectations on him.

yeah I agree, not fair to compare a HS guy that hasn't seen college competition. This time last year I would've said Malik had an elite mid-range game based on the games I'd seen him play, but that obviously didn't translate. Nick spoon's first step & explosiveness at the rim are things that should translate regardless of competition. Will have to wait and see if he can get by college guards & finish in the college paint.

It's going to be interesting to see how Nick & Lamar mesh with each other. Most don't expect Lamar to be here more than 2yrs. We're going to have to find ways to get both on the court at the same time.
