Mangum went 5-5 tonight and improved his average to .420

Boomer White of aTm was 0-3 and is hitting .415

Mangum's actually hitting .423, and White's at .410.

Mangum would be fourth nationally if he had enough at bats to quality... one point out of third place. Not bad for a kid who was going to the prom this time last year.

Correction: IS third nationally at the moment.

How does he not have enough at bats to qualify? He's been a mainstay in the lineup for 80% of the season.

That was my mistake... I was looking at a list that did not include him because it didn't reflect the 5 for 5 night. He is now first in the SEC and third or fourth in the nation.

Charlie Hustle was five for friggin five. Not freshman of the year, player of the year.

.423/.475/.534

Freaking 1.009 ops as a freshman leadoff hitter... Unbelievable

BTW, at 175 lbs, mangum is our ops leader and he's 3rd in slugging behind hump (.003 behind) and rooker (.014 behind)

You have to imagine he will naturally add 10 or 15 pounds of muscle mass in the next couple of years. He may never be a serious home run threat but he may hit 60 doubles before he goes. Have never seen anyone spray it like he does, any pitch, anywhere.

I will be the first to admit I liked the kids and the way he plays. But, I did not think he could statistically keep this up. He is lights out and it is one of the more impressive things I have seen in a while.

Do the SECT games count for figuring batting average 'crown?' To be the SEC batting champ as a True Freshman would be awesome.

Well, that is obviously almost entirely BA-driven.

Yeah, but still impressive. He has 12 extra base hits (18.8% of his hits) so it isn't like he just hits singles. I think that % will creep up every year he's here

I agree with you. And the fact that it's BA driven doesn't mean that it's not worth as much, just that he's not doing it with as much power as those guys. I think he's 7th or 8th on the team in ISO.

FWIW: Mangum turned 20 years old back in March

MSU has 4 hitters in the line up with a .200+ ISO this year, and Nate Lowe is around .162 ISO.

Well, he's eligible for the 2017 draft then. We may only have him for 2 years.

This is correct. But, he will have a lot more leverage in contract negotiations after being drafted as a sophomore than the other Jr's in the draft. So he could easily afford to turn something down outside of the top 5 rounds or so.

Ok, forget that mangum is great in college... How good of an mlb prospect is he? I think he has to profile as a cf, so he needs to be a plus defender... I don't think he is yet. His k/bb ratio is good at 0.85, but he doesn't walk very much at all... His bb rate is 7.7%. His babip is .450, which is crazy high. I'm not sure he's a top 5 round guy

I seen it dawg

Let's enjoy him for a few more days before we start breaking down his draft status

Haha... I'm enjoying the heck out of him. He's my favorite current player by far and he's closing in on Travis chapman as my favorite ever
