I've never hooked it either of the ways discussed in the article. I've seen people hook through the tail, but I was taught by a guide to hook it through the hard part of the shell sort of ahead of the spur, but not go through the tail, which now that I see it makes a lot more sense. The only downside is that with smaller shrimp, you can sometimes have trouble hooking them without killing them quickly, which I doubt matters for red fish but I think does for specks.

I agree with this for live shrimp, but I believe the article is just referring to dead or "market" shrimp. For market shrimp, I have always hooked them somewhat similar to the article. I hook them through one side and out the other, just a little ways behind the head. I think it has the same result - pulls the hook toward the hard shell and folds it naturally when reeling or popping the cork.
