MSU's Wilson confident he will answer questions about speed

By Parrish Alford

Daily Journal

INDIANAPOLIS - NFL teams would like to see a faster De'Runnya Wilson, but more than a few may invite him along the ride because of his size.

Wilson, the Mississippi State standout, measured 6-foot-4 5-8 at the NFL Combine today, the tallest among wide receivers.

"They're concerned with my speed, but I'm going to do well when the time comes," he said. "I've prayed about it. I've put it in God's hands. I'm not concerned about it at all."

Wilson is rooming at the combine with Ole Miss wide receiver Laquon Treadwell.

The highest-rated wide receiver here, Treadwell has stirred the news cycle by deciding not to run the 40-yard dash at the combine but to wait for his pro day on March 11.

Wilson says he never considered not going through all combine drills.

"I'm totally different. I can't base myself off nobody else and what they want to do. I'm willing to do whatever it takes," he said.

A second-team All-SEC choice by the league's coaches in 2015, Wilson ended his MSU career with 133 catches for 1,949 yards and 22 touchdowns.

He says in the early get-to-know-you phase the Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos have shown the most interest in him.

"That would be a great fit. I see a well-developed team with great coaches. Whoever selects me I will showcase, not broadcast, and I will be blessed to be there," he said.

I am going to miss him. It is probably too much to hope that the Falcons draft him.

What time does everyone expect him to run? I have no clue.

Coming out of high school, 247 listed him at 4.56 - no idea how accurate that was then.

Yeah, I just hope it's under 4.6.

If he runs below 4.6 then he will probably go in round 2 or 3. I think everything else at the combine is good to push him up the boards. His positioning in the redzone is 2nd to none.

If he runs a legit 4.5 he may go in the 2nd round.

I would guess that you can add one and a half to two tenths of a second to most high school times. Of course he may have gotten faster with a good strength and conditioning program in college.

I just hope he got with a good trainer to work on his 40. He doesn't need to run like Derek Pegues and end up running about 42 yards because he doesn't run in a straight line. The 40 has a lot to do with proper technique. Technique can easily lower it 0.1 or raise it if you do it wrong.

HS times cannot be trusted. A lot of guys run slower at the combine than thier listed HS time. Strange after 4 years of physical maturity and training.

Article from 2013.

157 of the 203 players are as fast or slower than they were in high school, according to their claimed 40 times.

93 players ran a sub-4.5 second 40 yard dash in high school. By the time they finished college, just 40 players were capable of breaking the 4.5-second mark.

Bear would be great at the Texans because we will have a new QB and they will need a big target across from Deandre. I see Bear being a possession guy that will have a lot of value in run blocking too.

If he runs 4.65 or below with his size he's gonna go up the draft boards.

Competitors love to compete. Bear wants to compete at the combine instead of shying away. He ain't scared of the other wideouts. Good for him.

I think 4.65 is a good over/under.

Agreed....it would be great if he could post close to a 4.60. But I would be pretty surprised if he is that fast.

I believe he's gonna hit mid 4.6. If he gets into 4.5 range look out.

You can work on speed, you can't teach size. He just needs to not be slow.

Yep, Alshon ain't fast but he's making big money and working on even bigger deal now. There's only so many 6'5" wr out there.

I second this motion. Or he can replace Graham as a hybrid TE.

I hope the Falcons pick up Bear. They need a possession receiver to compliment Julio and their other wideouts. They have never truly replaced what Gonzalez brought to the table.

I stand corrected but he sure doesn't look that fast on the football field. I've seen him caught from behind more than once.
