He was a top 10 recruiter nationally in 2014 at Virginia. He signed 2 5* kids in 1 class at Virginia. That's beyond impressive. He's been solid his whole time there recruiting & he's their recruiting coordinator. Virginia being terrible has nothing to do with West's ability to recruit.

As I was listening to this I headed over and looked at UVA football schedules throughout the years. They haven't beaten Va Tech since 2003!! Can you imagine losing to OM 12 years in a row?!!!

Sometimes. Teams like Texas & Florida have been bad & they've recruited well. Back to West the team being terrible can't be put on the shoulders of a Safeties Coach.

Whoever we hire is getting some damn good players. Could you imagine interviewing a coach and saying you'll be coaching the number 2 rated safety coming out of high school, one that is 6'3" with the hands of Lebron James, and one that has 4.4 speed. Oh yeah, we're also going to get a top 10 safety and one that is 6'4" for 2017. Have fun!

I agree, but there are some core criteria we should try to shoot for. At a minimum, we need a guy who has a strong pedigree for coaching the position (all conference players, NFL draft picks, etc.). Lake seems like the best guy utilizing that criteria. Recruting is important, but it's also secondary in importance to actual coaching ability in this case. We already have Sirmon and Buckley on that side of the ball. Ideally you want a staff full of ace recruiters and it would be great if we could get a guy who was great at both. But I don't think that's likely in this stage of the coaching carousel season.

I don't know enough about him to have an opinion one way or the other, but NT's record has little to do with how good of a safety coach he is.

Sounds like he is used to coaching a zone defense where the DBs run to the center of their zones, sit down and become statues until the ball is in the air. He'd fit right in.

Sure it does, but there's a ton of other things that factor in the overall performance of the defense. The cornerbacks coach has a big role in those passing stats, too.
