To handle open water as well as woods, either a 30" - 32"barrel, probably with a polychoke. Plenty people like pumps and probably just as many like autoloaders. Had a Remington pump and an older Browning auto. Loved them both. Pump/poly in the woods and auto for river/lakes.

Pump: Benelli SuperNova

Auto: Beretta A300 or Franchi Affinity

All quality guns that won't cost you an arm & a leg.

Got a Remington 870 with a 26 inch barrel when I turned 12. Never bought another and have killed ducks, turkeys, and doves with it. In my opinion it's the best bang for your buck.

Naaah. But you're close. Got the 870 pump with a poly when I was 10, bout 1949. Got the Browning auto in 60's to hunt the mighty Mississippi islands. Wouldn't catch me hunting duck with 26" w/o a poly. The 870 cost $49 back then.

Definitely nothing wrong with an 870 - first gun I ever bought and still have it.

Remington 870, 26" barrel with modified or improved cylinder. Will never let you down, Ive had mine since 1987 and have had it in the shop one time, cost me $50 to fix it. I squirt it down with WD 40 and hit the water.

What SpeckleDawg said. Also, be careful of the new 870's. I've heard that the quality has slipped tremendously since Freedom Group bought Remington.

the only thing that has slipped is that they don't polish the chamber worth a crap. To fix that, toothpaste on a 12 ga brush in a drill will get it smoothed right up.
