View Full Version : 12-23-15 severe weather event

Storms have already started developing and some gave gone severe and one tornado warned earlier tonight. This will be a life threatening day. For our area, the worst looks to be over NW MS and west TN where Tthe SPC has given a hatched threat area for significant tornadoes. But keep in mind anywhere in this state can see severe weather today...particularly this afternoon. I'll be in the field chasing today so my updates to the board may become spotty as business picks up, but I saw where Ref said he'll be watching this closely as well. Stay safe today and heed all warnings.

Thanks. I appreciate that. But I couldn't do what I do without meteorologists like Ref producing the info we look at. I'm just the idiot crazy enough to go out and try to get next to these things.

NW MS now under a moderate risk for tornadoes, some violent, for today. Everything is coming together for an outbreak. Moderate may not sound too threatening but that's the second highest rating that is used. SPC uses moderate when normal people use holy shit.

Accurate post here. Moderate is not a term to use lightly. If you live in about a 150 mile radius of Memphis, you need to be extremely focused on this event as you could see some very very dangerous weather.

Now that's not to say everyone else shouldn't be focused, but that's the high focus area. Everyone still needs to be on high alert though. This is setting up to be a bad one.

I'm in Dallas right now about to catch a flight to Memphis at 10:25 (arrival at noon) should I expect bad weather when I get in? Or for my flight to be cancelled?

The storms today were our Obi Wan storms. They were our only hope of blocking the moisture and instability of getting north. They're moving out so the gulf pipeline will be open for business.

It may delay it if you take 45 down to Meridian. Plus it's a little more wide open so you might be able to get out of the way/into a ditch sooner.

That early either route may not matter but 45 would have the least chance of storms.

Tornado Watch #559 has been issued for NW Mississippi. This is a PDS watch, which means a Potentially Dangerous Situation. This is the highest classification for a Tornado Watch, which means the tornado threat is VERY real today.

Thanks Ref for all that you do when we are looking at a severe weather event. These weather threads are not for those to make jokes and say we need to get a sense of humor, etc. For those who do this, I think they have lost touch with reality, as severe weather is not something to joke about as you know. I have experienced and seen some major damage, from tornadoes, severe winds and severe hail.

These systems are moving 60-70 MPH, so you're not going to be able to outrun these storms. Once a warning is issued for your area, get to your safe place IMMEDIATELY. I don't care what you think about these warnings or your history with them. Get in there as soon as possible, and cover up. I don't want to hear of anyone getting injured or killed because they didn't heed a warning. Remember that all it takes is one tornado to cause a catastrophe.

The HRRR is not handling this well, IMO, so I wouldn't go with the latest run of the HRRR. It truly depends on the model and the run.
