I think I might try to do a little bass fishing Saturday once it warms up in the afternoon. What are the best baits for wintertime? I was think Carolina or Texas rigged plastic worked slowly bouncing off the bottom. Is that about right?

when the water is truly cold I liked a jig and pig fished just as slow as you can reel it ... also liked to work it around something that might warm up a degree or two like rip-rap or standing timber or if it's a power plant - around the hot water discharge ... that was the larger lakes in Georgia - not sure about Miss ..... of course, the plastic worm is always reliable but I think in a smaller size fished Carolina style....
thanks for posting, the other forum is almost unreadable right now

As always with fishing, it's going to depend on water temp, conditions and type of lake you're on. As long as water temps are staying in the 60's or maybe even upper 50's you may be able to get on a pretty active bite unless you are in some really tough post frontal weather. If there is rip rap around a square bill crankbait is a good fall bait. If you have grass or pad stems left in the lake a plastic jerkbait like a Fluke will fool 'em if weather has been reasonably stable for several days. Lipless crankbaits can be surprisingly effective even in cold conditions if you have the right cover in the lake like submerged grass or scattered pad stems near some deeper areas of water.

Good stuff.. go to the backs of creeks and look for active baitfish. Spinners, cranks, and even topwater if you see some still schooling. Water temps still have not gotten down to where they usually are. My advice, hit it hard until the big freeze comes.

On a warm year a couple years ago I had my best two days ever on Dec. 27th and 29th

This is great advice. Got to find the baitfish. I like to throw traps when I get around a shallow school this time of the year. Any shad imitating bait works. Baitfish may still be around grass. I've had a lot of luck this fall throwing a swim jig in the grass.

With a high of 81, this Saturday looks like the one. I sat last weekend out.
