View Full Version : The nightmare scenario for State...

Will be if Dan stays. Here's the case (BTW, I'm going to do this "Shotgun-style" since he's not with us):

1. Our recruiting for this year will be shot. No one is going to say it, but that pack of a half dozen 4 and 5 stars is going to mysteriously start to slip off the board. All of them have legit SEC offers and we're in 2nd position or tied for the lead with all of them. I predict we'll finish with one or two guys on that list vs. the 5 or 6 needed for this class to be legit, they know Mullen is wounded.

2. Dan will start to lose Scott's confidence. If I'm Stricklin, I have to wonder if I have the right guy if he's owned by his in-state rival. Scott stood by Dan in 2013 and he managed to win out those last 3 games. In retrospect, that was complete luck except for the bowl game where we dominated a less athletic team. Overall though, we peaked last year at the wrong time and we are 9 - 7 in our last 16 games with losses against all ranked opponents. And that's with our best player of all-time behind center.

3. The cigar boys and big money guys can't tolerate losing to Ole Miss 4 years in a row, and right now we appear to be clearly on that track. Would not be surprising at all to have Ole Miss having won 6 out of 7 against us over the next 3 years based on how the teams stack up recruiting wise.

4. Dan wants out - that much is clear. If he's forced to stay for the money, much of what has been charming about him will be gone and we'll be left with a petulant, indignant coach that smarts off to the media, hates recruiting, and is throwing his name into the hate for every single job out there. If Dan is the face of MSU next year (he will be), that looks terrible for the school and our program.

5. The longer he stays and the more he poisons the well, the harder it will be to rebuild. We are rebuilding next year with our toughest schedule in years: Bama, LSU on the road and potentially challenging road games at UMass and BYU with a brand new starter at QB. A&M and Auburn will both be improved as well. Going to be an adjustment, even if our overall depth is better next year. Time to take our medicine and go through the change all at once, not drag it out over 2 or 3 years.

The more I think about it, the more I hope that Dan is gone within the week. Even if he were to stay 2 or 3 weeks I think it does nothing but damage, and if he stays for the 2016 campaign I think it's going to be the worst one in recent memory.

People said the same thing 2 years ago. Glad nobody listened.

We will be better on offense, defense and special teams next year than we were this season. More balance on O and actually be able to stop someone on D.

That said, we may not win a western division game.

I've probably read more delusional things, but I can't think of any right now.

How can Mullen recruit if it's a "widely believed fact" that he's actively trying to find another job?

BTW, if it's not clear to everyone, I *LOVE* Dan Mullen. Absolutely love the guy and have defended him like crazy. Check the archives, I'm on the record consistently on that point. The guy who did the whip in the locker room with the team last week?! The guy who wore the "Shitters Full" Christmas sweater?! The guy who went out of his way to elevate Dak, make him the face of the program and create space for him to be a great leader. I love that Mullen. Problem is, that guy is gone and what we're left with is not good for MSU.

Randy, You're right on. Not delusional at all.

Also, we no longer have 4 auto wins, with BYU joining our non-conf schedule. I'm really hoping we move on at this point.

You've been too quiet for my tastes, would love to see you weigh in on this topic.

I'm still thinking it through. In situations like this, I always find myself overreacting & find that I think much clearer a few days later. There certainly has to be changes, but those changes don't necessarily have to be people's jobs, but rather in an effort to acquire more talent.

I don't think we have an Xs & Os/ Playcalling problem. I think we have a Jimmy's & Joe's problem & worse, don't really have a clear answer on how to fix that problem without cheating in recruiting. I think there needs to be an emphasis on re-establishing MSU's identity as a physical, talented team on the line of scrimmage, & Mullen needs to start taking more chances on troubled players that were kicked off their former college teams. Ole Miss has benefited from this with Stringfellow & Kelly.

I don't think Whittingham, Wells, etc are the answer because I don't think we have an Xs & O's coaching problem & nothing they've done indicates they could solve that. If we do make a move, it needs to be for recruiting purposes.

If our job comes open, I also want Stricklin to go silent for a week & see who contacts him & begs for the job. I think that helped Ole Miss with Freeze because they hired a coach that was passionate about Ole Miss & Oxford & was thus able to sell it. Mullen is proud of his program, but he does nothing to sell Starkville, the people, or the University. Someone with more passion about those things, could only help us on the recruiting trail. I'm tired of my cute blonde girlfriend flirting with other men all the time. Our relationship can't grow or get more intimate because she always flirting & looking for a better man. The sex is great, but I want more.

I feel in many ways that we are in the same spot Ole Miss was with Cutcliffe, & we need to look back of that situation to figure out how to handle this one. History is our greatest teacher & think there are some things to be learned from that episode. The key is that poeple's ego have to get out of the way, people need to trust each other, & come together, for the good of MSU, & figure how to fix this nagging problem. I think Mullen has done a wonderful job at MSU, but, although we said we wanted a coach that could sustain 7-9 win season, the truth is that we lied to ourselves & MSU fans want more. MSU fans want to win a championship & unless changes are made either in philosophy or staff, that has no chance of happening at status quo.

Now, with that. I'll retreat to the creepy dark gay porn set I was at last week when I wasn't allowed to post.

Agree with this 100%. I would say the floor I'd like to see is 8 - 10 wins and consistent Egg Bowl wins, definitely not realistic in this era.
