View Full Version : Weather Update

Ref and some other meteorologists feel free to chime in on this but tomorrow evening might get very rough for a good portion of MS..especially the western half. This is a significant ramp up in severity from what they were forecasting just this morning. Jackson NWS is now saying discrete supercells are now very likely in the red shaded area. Those are the storms that carry your predominant tornado threat. If you, or friends and family, live in the red shaded area you need to prepare tonight for potentially dangerous weather tomorrow night. Have your shelter plan ready, have your cell phone charged and with you. Have flashlights (not candles) ready and working. But, the most important thing you can have is a weather radio with SAME technology.

While all the ingredients are not there at levels you would normally see for a tornado outbreak with this system. Enough are there at more than adequate levels to make this a potentially dangerous situation for some people. This will be enhanced by the fact this will happen at night when visibility is bad and people are asleep. I know myself, and other chasers will be scattered out trying to report back as quickly as possible, but we are also at an extreme disadvantage at night.

It's a low CAPE, high Shear environment. Usually ingredients for a straight line wind event. West of Jackson the threat is a bit higher because it looks like there will be a few discrete (separate from the main line) supercells, that will be in a decent environment to spin up a tornado or two. Eventually, the squall line that will have moved through Arkansas will overtake any other isolated cells and become just a large line of storms with threats for very heavy rain and strong straight line winds. Not much of a hail threat with this system either.

How about an update? Are we still looking at a strong tornado possibility or has the squall line turned it into more of a straight line wind event?

I'm sitting just north of Yazoo city and right now not seeing a lot. NWS is still showing very high shear values so if a storm can get going it still stands a good chance of rotating. So far they have not been able to sustain themselves ahead of the main line. This system still has a tornado threat to it but that should start to decrease as the line moves east. I have seen damage reports from the winds today. Some associated with storms and some not. I've measured one gust to 40 and several over 30 this afternoon.

Thank God the wind isn't blowing just to the southwest...between the paper plant and you I don't think I could eat supper. In the area for hunting or work?

I'll shoot some video if there's something worthwhile. This system is about to be a full fledge bust. Gonna sit here a little longer and see if I can get some lightning shots and then pack it up and head back to Vegas.

Ha, thanks for your work but I am glad your night is a bust for the good of us all!

That's the interesting thing about storm chasers (and other similar professions). Their enjoyment comes from something most fear. Sure they may be scared too, but I assume it's an even bigger rush than fear. What could kill us, feeds them.

Thanks for the updates.

I just got home from work and I have my full operations running. Watching the tornado warnings right now for Hinds and Madison counties. Clear rotation, not sure if anything is on the ground though. No radar-indicated TDR (Tornado Debris Signature) so that makes me more comfortable of the fact that there is not a tornado on the ground. But you should still take this warning seriously if you're in the Madison, Annedale, Flora areas.

Storm is going much more linear, tornadic threat so far is going down the toilet as this goes more linear. Now there will still be some threat for embedded torandoes, but it has decreased dramatically. Straight-line wind threat is pretty high, still. Keep stuff tied down tonight or it may not be there in the morning.

Haha...some low level rotation is evident on radar, but nothing confirmed on the ground yet. Still would be a good idea to try to entice Bubby inside if you could.
