Rebel tears are delicious. I have seen numerous posts on the Spirit about how some are done following Ole Miss football because of the heartbreak. It's Jonestown massacre level over there right now.

If that truly is the rule then it is ridiculous or they are interpreting it wrong. I mean why does it matter if you lateral and it hits the ground, just because its fourth down? Or fumble for that matter? As long as it doesn't go forward it shouldn't matter if it is a fumble or lateral or it hits the ground, as long as it is behind the runner, IMO.

Since when can fumbled laterals not be advanced? I call BS

I trust good rebels are in church this morning being thankful that their head coach is also a missionary. Saturday's loss should separate the missionaries from the fans from the chaff.

Probably fewer Ole Miss sweater vests at Pinelake this morning. I'm sure they will watch the internet stream to save face.

TOP LEFT CORNER!! Even if it was a fumble and couldn't be advanced, Treadwell was on the field with his helmet off. OM was lucky they didn't get a penalty.

They can be advanced. It was a backwards pass not a fumble. Mr. Spirit Skinny Jeans doesn't know the rules, and is that a big surprise?

They are confusing a 4th down fumbled FORWARD with a backwards lateral. Can't fumble the ball forward on 4th down and take the new spot. Idiots.

What is their basis for saying the lateral cannot be advanced?

They are trying to claim it is a fumble, not a backward pass. A fumble on 4th down can't be advanced by the offense. The flaw in their logic is making a GIANT leap that the ball hitting the ground made it a, "fumble" instead of a backward pass.

Clearly Henry was throwing the ball backward, making it a, "backward pass". A backward pass can be advanced, period.

Hey Reb lurkers, if a QB throws a backward pass that hits the ground, it is not called a fumble. You lost, period. Stop whining.

Chad Kelly has bobbled and dropped shotgun snaps several times this year. Using their logic, the ball would be dead at the spot. Didn't that happen with the infamous helmet deflection play against Bama? The reason the ball isn't dead at the spot is because it's not considered a fumble. It's a backward pass.

Bottom line, the fumble rule was put in place so guys couldn't fumble the ball forward to gain a first down or score if recovered. What happened here wasn't a fumble at all - it was a backwards pass.

You can't fumble forward and have it recovered for a gain. I've never heard any interpretation of this rule applying to a backwards lateral.

Talk about sore losers "it's not over yet!!!"

Exactly- as has been stated in the thread- it was not a fumble. Their whining and tears are glorious.

Exactly. The exception clearly states that it must be a FUMBLE. What I saw along with everyone else was a legit lateral pass.

There a video somewhere on YouTube (I forget the team) of a team that does this on purpose. When the ball is snapped the receiver stands up well behind the LOS and behind the QB. The QB passes the ball to the receiver and it bounces off of the ground which is then caught by the receiver. It LOOKS like an incomplete screen pass which stumps the defense but it's legal and the receiver takes off. Wish someone could find that video.

ETA: Found one example....

There's also LSU-Florida 2010. The pass on the fake field goal was deemed a backwards pass (i.e., lateral), so when the ball hit the ground, the kicker could scoop it up and advance it. This is really simple stuff, OM fans.

Look no further than the Miami / Duke fiasco last week. The refs blew several blocks in the back, and a player being down, but a couple of the laterals hit the ground with no one questioning it. Nothing to see here.

So let's say the refs made the "correct" call, Arkansas runs out of downs, and OM wins. That would have been an overtime win against Arkansas, at home, in a game where the landshark D made Brandon Allen look like Tom Brady, and OM fans would have been super proud of themselves. Their next opponent is essentially a better version of Arkansas, and then an away Egg Bowl. Even if that one play had been called in their favor, they'd still go 8-4 and get beat by UNC in the Music City Bowl.

On the play before that, one of their DBs knocked down a pass and taunted the receiver. Maybe he missed this stat line:
Brandon Allen: 33-45, 442 yds, 6 TDs

I love that the announcers won't even call them the Rebels anymore. They're the Redskins of the SEC, all they're missing is Daniel Snyder.

Read FootballScoop's timeline from the last 12 hours- it's basically a full-fledged campaign to get the game reversed... And you'll never guess where that guy went to school and was an assistant football coach at.

OM only has themselves to blame. They had 2 opportunities to stop the 2 point conversion. Haynes had a stupid face mask penalty then Hampton tries to tackle low at the goal line. If they want to blame anyone, they should blame themselves. What a bunch of prima donnas. Your defense blew the game.

Maybe instead of worrying about the lateral, they should be worrying about their D that was supposed to be "one of the best in the nation" that just got absolutely carved up.

Why would he throw it like that? Wouldn't that have a greater chance of bouncing the wrong way instead of just throwing it to him?

The bounce pass has been used for a double pass trick play.

You would think that Ole Miss would know that since Presbyterian is an OOC staple for them.

Or, rather than celebrating and actin' a fool, they should have worried about running to the ball and making sure the play was dead....

This will be even better than Memphis week. Caught it by mistake on the way home one evening, so damn funny listening to that.
Tomorrow will be great if I can remember to tune in.
