No surprise and good move by USC putting it out now... will allow them to start working the back channels to get a new coach ASAP in December.

What a day for news in college football:

- ULL gets put on probation bc of former Ole Miss assistant David Saunders
- Will Grier gets busted for using PEDs
- Steve Sarkisian gets fired for a drinking problem
- Steve Spurrier announces retirement

Helluva day

I was JUST reading an article about mid-season moves...
Well South Carolina has made it's move...

SOUTH CAROLINA

Steve Spurrier stayed a year too long. No one knows this more than the Ol' Ball Coach, who is 0–4 in the SEC with three blowout losses this season. It would be wise for the Gamecocks to declare their intentions soon while still allowing for a proper send-off for Spurrier. South Carolina has made huge leaps as a program under him. Finding someone to replace Spurrier is daunting. The good news for the Gamecocks is that theirs could be the only SEC job that will be opening up. The bad news is that they will be competing for coaching candidates with Virginia Tech, Miami and Virginia. South Carolina also has the disadvantage of being at least two years away from being competitive.

UGA ( I think if Richt loses a couple more)
UCF

And it's immediate - interim coach to be named Wednesday. That is really odd, I figured he would stick out the season.

Nice way of telling the coach it's time to let go (time to retire). Either that or he's sick which would be really sad.

Not surprised he retired. Little surprised he won't finish the season. JWS stuck it out to the bitter end in 2003.

Steve (USCe) is done.

not to be confused with Steve (USCw) being done, as well...

It's time. Maybe even past time. We'll see if he really means it this time.

seems like I remember him saying in a presser (maybe SEC media days) that he was around for another couple of years - you're right - something else going on here

OBC is such a no-nonsense guy that it doesn't surprise me at all that he is retiring the instant he feels like its time.

Seems odd leaving in the middle of a season, but when a change is needed the sooner you can start that the better regardless of what time of year it is (except the heat of crootin season).

without being touched, or something to that affect. He was obviously frustrated.

I actually kind of am surprised.

He made a big deal earlier this season about not retiring yet did he not?
