Not sure if there has been a thread on this, but today Kansas State suspended their band director for overseeing a halftime show that featured what appeared to be a Jayhawk eating a dong.

Is this just more political correctness crap or do you think the director should have been suspended?

no, i don't think the director should have been suspended. Now, i may be a football coach, but i was also an all-state band geek back in the day. when you see the director's referenced drill sheets, there is no doubt what the drill was supposed to be. the weird band geek thing is that the drill sheet was already talked about some within band director/drill writer circles for a few weeks prior to the game. NOT ONE PERSON with a credible degree in music that saw it before or even the film of the actual performance said anything was out of line. you have a bunch of PC idiots sitting in the stands trying very hard to see something. you also have a few lazy marchers that didn't march their drill as well as they should have, making it all the more easy for said idiots to come up with their vision of what was on the field.

A few thoughts:

I realize I'm a Star Trek fan, but that's clearly the Enterprise and not a dick. Unless you have testicles as big as baseballs or a dick the size of a golf pencil, the proportions are clearly wrong.

The band didn't do a great job making the shape. But that's how college bands go -- very little practice time each week.

Anyone with half a brain knows that no officially-sanctioned college marching band is going to have a halftime show about dicksucking. Kansas State should retract their apology and tell anyone "upset" by this (I highly doubt anyone actually is) to grow up.

I really am baffled at how this is being blamed on "political correctness." If anything it's PC's right-wing reflection -- pearl clutchers and "Think of the children!!" types. It's no different than the time they played a Hardees commercial at DWS that included a woman in a bikini and the religious/old mobs freaked out. Stricklin caved on that one and wrongly apologized, just like KSU.

Haha hilarious!! I'm alright with the suspension. Nothing shaped remotely close to a penis should ever be anywhere close to the Jayhawks mouth on KSU's field. Ever. If Ole Miss did this to us unintentional or not we'd want to burn their stadium down. If you're going to display your biggest rivals logo on your field don't have anything dick shaped anywhere near its mouth. It does look like the Jayhawk is sucking a dick shaped object. Well played KSU. Only cost you a band dork being suspended but will result in a lifetime of laughs.

On the chart, it's clearly the Enterprise. I guess my question would be what was the context? Who is choreographing their rival and what for? Surely not to honor them. Must be some kind of jape. So if it's not the Enterprise as a phallic analog, what is it? Why have the Enterprise headed toward the Jayhawk's mouth? Is it supposed to be a Romulan Warbird or something? So what's going on if it's not penis!!??? LOL

On the field, at least in the screen cap I saw, it was clearly not a penis, and was probably easily recognizable as the enterprise to trekkies. I'm not sure why it would make sense for the enterprise to be going into they Jay Hawks mouth, so maybe it was intended to be a phallic symbol, but it's a pretty subtle reference, if so.

I think what some people are missing is that KSU wasn't even playing Kansas. So, why even bring a Kansas jayhawk into the show? Obviously, the band director couldn't come up with a reasonable answer to that question.

It was intended to be a jab at their rival, any way you look at it. I got a feeling that the true intention of the joke was probably much lamer than something involving a penis.

This. If you're K-State, why even lower yourself to their level. I admittedly don't know the dynamic of their rivalry, but with how shitty Kansas football is and has been for years, it'd be like us going out of our way to talk shit to MS-Valley State, or something. I don't get it.

Also considering his "apology" stated he meant to disrespect to Kansas...sounds like bull shit to me.
