Would like to know who you guys think was the best player to play at State by jersey #. Let's start with numbers 1-10.

#7 = nick turner

Ok, maybe not. He is the 7 in msstate7 though. I created this handle first on genespage while I was a student. I was a huge turner fan, but he never panned out

Dockery would've been a good choice for #4, too. I believe Brown was #25.

Good topic. Stealing from everybody else's answers, I think the current list is (with locks in bold):

#1 - Moulds
#2 - Smoot
#3 - Dontae
#4 - Jameon Lewis/Charles Mitchell
#5 - Eric Daniels
#6 - Malcolm Johnson
#7 - Nick Turner
#8 - Kelvin Love
#9 - Madkin
#10 - Ray-Ray Bivins

I've never been one to pay much attention to numbers so I can't really help fill it in.

He panned out the way Maurice Clarett did. Great player on the field but too many demons off it.

Nick griffin deserves #7 over turner if for no other reason than he was a warrior for overcoming his injuries and being a good kid in the process

Think that's moot because Wyatt goes in over both of them, so:

#1 - Moulds
#2 - Smoot
#3 - Pegues
#4 - Charles Mitchell
#5 - Nikoe Whitley/Eric Daniels (Eric Daniels was before my time I guess; not sure who should get this one)
#6 - Malcolm Johnson
#7 - Matt Wyatt
#8 - Justin Jenkins/Kelvin Love/Izell McGill
#9 - Madkin/Slay (not sure on this one; obviously slay was a better player, but we basically got a year and a half out of him, with even his best year basically wasted by our DC)
#10 - Cam Lawrence

For a school that's had some really poor qb play, I can't believe we have 2 qb's on this list. Guess we're really lacking on single digit players

1 Has to be Moulds, honorable mention to Chad Bumphis and Ashley Cooper, soon Bear Wilson may bypass both
2 Has to be Smoot, although Walt Harris gets honorable mentions
3 Goes to Derek Pigues, sorry Dontae
4 Goes to Charles Mitchell, honorable mention Kevin Dockery
5 Goes to Nickoe Whitley
6 Goes to Brandon McRae
7 Goes to Matt Wyatt
8 Goes to Kelvin Love
9 Should go to Wayne Madkin
10 Goes to Cam Lawrence, I guess. Couldn't think of anyone. I had Tim Nelson, but I don't think that's right. Could be Ray Ray from Gautier
11 Goes to Scott Westerfield
12 Goes to Kevin Prentiss, honorable mention Jerious Norwood and Dicenzo Miller
13 Goes to Robert Bean/Johnthan Banks
14 Goes to Omarr Conner
15 Goes to Don Smith
16 Goes to FANT
17 Tyler Russell
18 Brandon Hill/Marcus Washington???
19 Tee Milons (HA!)
20 Michael Gholar??

The only ones I'd quibble with are:

Brandon McRae. Maybe if he had been on a better team with a better QB, but I'd give Malcolm Johnson the nod over him.
Kelvin Love. I remember Justin Jenkins more, so I assume he was better. Mostly I remember Kelvin Love for throwing him a bunch of jump balls that he couldn't come down with. But I really don't remember paying attention to either enough to know which one is better or which one had better stats.
Robert Bean. I know Bean was good and he and Smoot were a great tandem, but was he as good as Banks?

I'm on the fence with:
Madkin. He was winningest QB at MSU when he finished, played in a SEC CG, and also had a good three year stretch, but he was still almost a game manager. Slay was obviously NFL talent, but we spent a year with him playing special teams and even when he started Wilson's scheme didn't take advantage of having him and Banks opposite of each other. Not sure he should be docked because we got so little out of him. Tough call.
Kevin Prentiss. He was electric and I wish we could see him in today's spread offenses. I think he'd put up gaudy numbers. But Norwood you can say the same about Norwood. Both are way up there on my list of favorite players. Another tough one.

I try to keep from playing revisionist history with the newer players, which is why I probably gave preference to some of the older ones.

Madkin has to be over Slay in my opinion. He was a four year starter during a successful era, and held several records for a while. While Slay was NFL talent, he was a one year starter on our defense.

Brandon McRae was a helluva player, and I would've loved to have seen him in an offense like the one we have now. Same for Kelvin Love. He gets the nod over Jenkins for #8 because he made so many big catches. For better or worse, Jenkins is remembered in my mind for a lot of big drops. It was rumored at one time that he didn't like Madkin and didn't exactly play his hardest, but I don't know how much of that is true, and how much of that is just an excuse for his poor play. He obviously had NFL talent, but he struggled too.

Norwood is one of my all time favorites, too. I just think Prentiss was special. I'll never forget the punt return against Tennessee in 1998, where for a fleeting moment, he made it possible for us to think that we were about to win the freaking SEC championship.

My stepdad at the time was a campus cop & pulled Jenkins over once. He said Jenkins was talking on the phone & playing with a yo-yo the whole time he was stopped so he gave him a ticket. I always LOL'd at that.
