Trying to find a generator that is portable and won't annoy the neighbors.

91 nailed it. The Honda generator is the only way to go. Small and really quiet. Anything else will be loud and an annoyance for everyone around you.

If you don't want to spend out the ass and want to get something that will do the job just as good, get this. http://www.harborfreight.com/900-peak700-running-watts-2-hp-63cc-2-cycle-gas-generator-epacarb-60338.html I've been using it for 3 years and have never had a problem. It's just a little bit louder than a Honda. I think it's 53dB. I just stick it behind a tree and never hear it again all day.

3 or 4 years ago and it was $800 plus back then, if I'm not mistaken. Then you'll probably want the roll cart that goes with it and that's another $150 or so. You're looking at a grand for the Honda but it is a good generator and like everyone has said, it is quiet in comparison to most generators.

Northern Industrial has a Honda 2000 clone on sale right now for less than $600. I can't say anything about the quality or noise level but I buy quite a bit of stuff from them at work and have never had an issue with their products. Another option is a Generac 2000 but it is louder than the Honda. I have both. My neighbor has a Honda 1000 and it is amazing how quite it is. Just depends on what all you are going to plug up.

The Hondas are good, quiet machines, no doubt. However, from my research about 5 years ago, I want to say that they have a plastic Cam in them. Not a huge detriment, as they've proven their reliability. But, I don't really like that design, if true.

So, I went with the Yamaha 2000is (http://www.yamahagenerators.com/Yamaha-EF2000iS-p/ef2000is.htm)

It's just as quiet, fairly light, and cheaper. Oh yeah, and unlike Honda, the Yamaha has a fuel gauge and a fuel shutoff petcock. This is important as it allows you to run the carb dry.

I too use the 2000i. Have never even thought of getting a cart for it, but we tailgate in our parking lot so don't have a long way to lug it.
