My Dad and Grandfather got me into horse racing as a kid. I will enjoy seeing if the Triple can be pulled off today

It's going to be a good one. Extra .25 mile with heavier dirt backs a big difference

What time will they run?

None will come close to what the "equine freight train" Big Red ran it in.

Well, there's Big Red- and then the rest of them. My Grandparents were at the Derby the year Red won it

What happens between 3:30 & 5:30?

Whats crazy about Red was Turcotte never popped him or pushed him that day- and he still ran the fastest ever. Turcotte just held on

I'll watch. Keep hoping to see history made, considering how long its been since the last Triple Crown. The Belmont is a bitch, though. It's tripped up several contenders the last decade or so.

Pharaoh another in a long line to fall short I believe. 13 have won the first two but lost the 3rd since Affirmed in '78.

I started paying attention with War Emblem in 02. Funny Cide and Smarty Jones completed that 3 year run of almosts.

Those are the last ones to run an uninhabited race. Injuries and bad luck have plagued the last 3 attempts.

Well, of course not.

I'll tune in, but it seems there have been many chances for the triple only to be beaten by a horse that has not run in all races. I haven't kept up with this one, but I wonder if there are well rested horses in this one as in past years?

That was great- I really enjoyed that. You could tell at the 3/4 pole he was gonna do it

Awesome.

Reporter to jockey: when did you know you were going to win?

Jockey: at the first turn

That was pretty cool. Wire to wire.

BTW, if you haven't seen Secretariat win the Belmont, watch this. http://youtu.be/V18ui3Rtjz4

Secretariat liked to see his competition. He'd let another horse get ahead, then smoke 'em. It's like he got off on rubbing it in. Secretariat won the Belmont by 85 yards (31 lengths). Pretty damn awesome.

Hell of a run. Hell of a horse. Worth the wait to see that. And he was only 2.65 seconds off Secretariat's pace, too. Unless I'm mistaken, I never saw his jockey whip him. Horse just had it the whole way.

Turcotte never even sat down on Secretariat that day. It's scary to think that he could have run that race a second or three faster if he had had to.

Today was impressive also- didnt realize it was the 3rd largest margin of victory in a Triple Crown race

Thats like losing 42-7 in football. 2/10's of second in those races are huge amounts of time

it was kind of bigreddish. Wire to wire pretty much, but the big thing was he walked away late. You thing the long distance might be there downfall but the longer it went the bigger lead he stretched out. That was kind of big red like. No hanging on, no fighting them off.

Only Secretariat ran it faster than AP did today. That's insane. And yes, it's crazy to think Secretariat could have run it even faster if he'd needed to.

Eh not quite. Today's was the fastest Belmont since 1992 (wiki). Big Red would be 42-7 against most. He beats AP 42-20. Still nowhere close.

yeah- but there are a few of 2:26 plus Belmonts- he barely took 2nd. That 2:24 is so far out its stupid. And damn sure more than 42-20. Today was very impressive no doubt though.

Secretariat would have still won by 12.5 lengths. Granted, I think American Pharoah could have run it faster if the horses in the field had actually tried to push the pace.

as would Secretariat who was 31 lengths up and his jockey never even sat down to push him. All Turcotte did was hold on

When Secrateriat won there wasn't even another horse in the picture when he crossed the line. AP strolled today as well. Neither was pushed in the Belmont. You will never know which would have won head to head. My money would be on Secrateriat. As far as the owners see it, the REAL money starts today for AP. As far as that goes I think Seattle Slew's descendents topped Secrateriat's by a good measure. We will have to wait to see how AP's genetics do. I'm just glad I got to see another Triple Crown won. I was beginning to think I wouldn't.

My cousin, Steve Cauthen, was the jockey on Affirmed in '78. Our family has gotten together in some form or fashion every year there has been a contender for the third win. We all had a feeling today that lucky #13 was gonna win it all today. We usually cheered when there was a contender that lost in the third race. But the family had a sense of relief and glad to finally see another jockey and horse take the Triple Crown. I'll admit, it was really cool seeing something done for the first time in a generation. Steve and Affirmed won two years before I was even born, so I grew up just reading all the articles and seeing all the pics and videos of the races from '78. it was great watching today with my brother and dad, especially.

No doubt. I truly believe that Secretariat is the greatest. I was just saying that the difference in time may not be the best American Pharoah has to offer. Same with Secretariat obviously.

That's not the right stat, or at least not worded correctly. This was the 3rd largest margin in the Belmont by a Triple Crown winner.

Both Secretariat's and AP's Belmonts were very clean races with no traffic problems in the beginning, and both were able to get to the rail quickly and unobstructed. Both were almost perfect races, but I can't see AP beating Secretariat. He was just a physical freak in the equine world.
