So our long-time strength coach, Richard Akins, is retiring this summer. It'll be a sad day to not see him at the complex. I wonder who we will bring in as strength coach now. Say what you want, but the guy knew how to run a strength program.

Or there are people that just struggle to put on weight/muscle no matter what you do.

some guys don't workout hard and skip workouts all together. Stands allowed this to happen and it caused a lot of friction between Akins and Stands

Jarvis Varnado too

Jarvis literally could not gain weight. They sent him to a buffet and had him eat until he almost got sick, and he put on maybe half a pound.

Yup, even NBA S&C programs couldn't get him bigger. It's a shame too; if he was built more like a Tyson Chandler (not the 7', obviously), he'd have a lot more staying power in the league.

I hate Jarvis Varnado now. I drive by a Pizza Hut and gain two pounds.

Was he that strength coach for baseball too? I sure hope not.....doesn't look like we have a strength program for baseball.

I had Coach Akins for Coaching Football in the early 90's. Good guy and an easy A. Wouldn't let you wear a hat in class though.

Ware also. Hands were apparently so weak as defenders repeatedly snatched the ball from his hands after he retrieved a rebound

I heard this also at the time. RS wouldn't stand behind him and enforce the rules.
