That's because he doesn't have a fastball. And he was completely tanked. He was doing good just to get it over the plate the last few batters. Kinda reminds me of the scene from "For Love of the Game." Costner's pitcher character is on the hill late pitching for a perfect game and he's out of gas. He mutters to himself about his catcher: "Damnit, Gus, just hold it over the damn plate. I'm throwin' straight shit right now."
