Despite 90% chance of rain and thunderstorms me, my dad, and a buddy had set this weekend aside some time back to do some fishing. We packed up the rain suits and said we were going to go do our best rain or shine. The only thing that would prevent that is lightning. My dad was able to leave town on Thursday and he went out Friday morning with T-Man on board the bulls bay. The weather man got it dead wrong. They encountered beautiful weather and a hot trout bite. They got 50 trout, 2 reds, and 2 sheepshead.

Me and my buddy were able to leave the metro friday night. We got in town late and sat by the boat hoping the weather man got it wrong again before heading off for what was essentially a long nap before getting up early the next morning.

We were up before sunrise discussing a strategy on where to fish in regards to the weather and where the rain would be.

The weather wasn't what it was the day before and I got to the hear the dreaded "you shoulda been here yesterday". Story of my life... We ran into scattered fish and some rain but were able to grind out a box of a few trout, a spanish, and a nice red. We had more throw back trout than keepers and ran into big, hungry gafftops at every stop. Even though the box doesn't reflect it, we caught fish all day long. A bunch of them. Just wish it would have been more of the desired specie. I was who caught the red and he was pound for pound the best fighting red I've ever hooked. He went on multiple big runs. I thought he was a bull until I got him close enough to see he was an eater. I got him close to the boat 3 times and every time he'd decide to turn around and take some drag. The spanish was an odd catch. First off, they're not supposed to be inshore in the marsh in April. We were trolling a bank and after I casted to the bank my dad's line rode the wind on the way to get completely entangled in my reel. As we were looking at the disaster my cork goes under. We're scrambling to get his line cut off my reel and after we do that we realize my line has now gotten completely tangled in my buddy's line on the front of the boat because the fish has ran that way. We cut him off and I'm finally able to reel in what I think is a small red. Turns out it's a spanish mackerel foul hooked in the side of the head! All these factors combined make that the weirdest catch of mine in some time.

Sunday weather looked worse than Saturday and we had a road trip ahead of us. We decided to stay protected and only fish for a few hours. Chasing reds until 10 am was the plan. Funny how it turns out, as we're beating up the bank for redfish we found a few scattered trout, 3 reds, and a flounder. Had a nice black drum, a cpl reds, and another flounder get off at the boat. Had we been 100% landing fish Sunday, it would have been a respectable box. Still wasn't awful considering the weather.

On the way back home my dad got me and my buddy some fresh shrimp and I invited some family over for boiled shrimp, fried trout, and all the fixings. I even fixed up a cajun specialty "sea spiders" (that's what pic #2 will be).

All in all a great weekend. Just goes to show you, when the weather forecast isn't good and everyone else stays at home, you can still go have fun. Always a blast when my dad gets T-man on board with us. Dude is a great fisherman. I highly suggest his guide service.

decent trip it sounds like ... I laid on the couch and watched the Masters all weekend and felt swollen from inactivity on Monday AM

Nothing wrong with that at all and even got a slam to finish the weekend. How were the "sea spiders"? I've been meaning to try that for a while, but never think about it.

Crunchy fried goodness. It's exactly what like you'd expect. Just something fun to do. It was my first time doing them. Like you I've been meaning to try them.

That's some fine looking cuisine! Ok, I'll go ahead and ask. What's the deal on the sea spiders? That's a new one on me.

"Sea spiders" are that little chunk of head meat that is connected to the legs that you get when you pull the heads off. Batter and fried it's just a crunchy snack

So what exactly are you frying and what are you eating? Are you frying part of the shell along with the meat?
