Dan Jones is simply wanting to restore the university of ole miss' shattered academic and national image. USM used to be called "The Southerners" and had "General Nat" (after Nathan Bedford Forrest) as their mascot. They knew 45 years ago that this was harmful to their image, so they changed to the Golden Eagles.

Unfortunately for ole miss, they seem stuck on both a 1936 marketing campaign (that's when they became the "rebels") and a reaction to the 1948 decision by President Harry Truman to integrate the military (with the confederate battle flag), as "tradishun".

The best move for The Self-Absorbed Narcissists Up North (TSANUN) is to totally scrap "Ole Miss", completely remove the "Rebel" and change to the Black Bears (or if they really want to stay "Rebel", make Admiral Ackbar their mascot and be "Rebels" against the Empire).

However, as long as TSANUN keeps the "Rebels" mascot, keeps flying and Mississippi Confederate Unit flags in the Grove, and keeps flinging "N-bombs" at players who screw up on the field, they can continue to trail The Mississippi State University in both prestige (higher ACT scores and smarter students and alums), and image (the school that outwitted Ole Miss Legislators to play black players in the NCAA basketball tournament, the first African-American Head football coach in the SEC, the Stanford of the SEC with our elite Engineering College and solid sports programs, etc.).
