The pieces are all coming together for us to lock up Newman right now IMO...

I thought McCray left LSU last season and wasn't coaching this year. Im not in the know, just keep hearing differing stories on McCray's relationship with Malik.

McCray didn't coach anywhere this year. He left LSU because Johnny Jones really didn't want him to do anything but recruit. He wanted more hands on responsibility with the day to day development of players & they just wanted him to be a recruit. That's why he only lasted 1 year.

Yep, McCray may have been recruiting Newman for LSU for a little while, but he definitely wasn't when they started to get the momentum.

The CB is promising but ultimately doesn't mean much, just as Newman's CBs have never really meant much. There's literally no one who knows what he's thinking right now outside of himself and maybe his dad.

Regular signing period begins April 15 and doesn't officially end until May 20. So he could sign in 3 weeks, or 2 months.

We have given ourselves a chance, and Howland has enough time to talk with them. One thing is for sure, I would guess Webster will give us every opportunity to convince Newman.

One would think the possibility still out there of getting an MSU legacy the quallity of Newman was an additional attractive aspect to taking the MSU head coaching job for Howland.

Howland's resume and his list of current Nba players automatically puts us in the game. Malik won't have to worry about playing in an empty hump.

Sword and Newman together would give us the best backcourt in the sec imo. Please happen...

Makes you wonder since Newman has never signed with or committed to anyone, did someone get in their ear early in the process to let him know Ray would not be back next year, kind of a "just don't do anything too fast and let this play out" deal

I think Malik is waiting for the NBA early entry deadline regardless of when signing period opens - that is April 26. I think he's waiting to see what Booker, Ulis and the Harrisons do at KY & what Frank Mason and Kelly Oubre do at Kansas. I believe if all or most of those come back, it was LSU. However, the events of today have to have some impact on that. I have no idea what the chances he lands in Starkville, but you have to think that it's 1000% more likely than it was last Friday.

Newman is choosing between Kentucky, LSU and Miss State. Recent developments put LSU in the lead, but everything's up for grabs now. Recently Newman said that facilities will not factor into his recruitment and are an "overrated factor" by fans who follow recruiting.

Eh, when you're Malik Newman, you're talking about the difference between the facilities of elite programs, for the most part.

I guarantee you that not having good facilities would put us at an even bigger disadvantage. It's just that once your facilities are good, it doesn't necessarily matter that much whose are 'better'.

That facility was still important for us. Not to make a big jump, but to at least stay where we were.

Do we know Musselman was Newman's lead recruiter for them?

Regardless, his relationship with any coach is not the reason he's considering them. It's because of the other kids committed there, period.

Elite recruits want a few things:

1) Ability to play with other elite players
2) Preparation for the NBA
3) Playing time, chance to shine

Those may go in various order, but I would say for just about every elite recruit nowadays, that is what they're looking for above pretty much everything else. Relationships with coaches, facilities, chance to win come after that, though winning is generally tied to the first 2 things.

The reason Howland gives us a chance in the Malik sweepstakes is that he suddenly gives us a big selling point on #2. Before, all we had was #3 along with the fact that his dad played here and he grew up around the program. We still can't offer #1, but we can now give him 2 of the 3. And Kentucky can't give him as much on #3, and LSU can't give him as much on #2 or #3.

I guarantee you Newman isn't considering LSU because he thinks Jones gives him a better chance than most to prepare him for the NBA, and I also guarantee he wasn't considering them because he just likes Musselman so much. It's because he can play with elite players.

There was talk to send Strugg to prep school before this new staff even arrived. Strugg played for Jackson Tigers last summer and was less than impressive. We have got to upgrade talent pool dramatically to be competitive. There has to be attrition. In my mind almost everyone is in play to "transfer" outside of Ware and sword.

smootness
03-30-2015, 08:32 PM
If Howland doesn't think Strugg is good enough, he won't be here. That Carver pipeline has been good for us, but it's not like we're getting elite guys, and there isn't anybody else there on the horizon.

If we had an in with a program like Wheeler here in GA, or Montverde Academy, etc., fine. But we can't take away a roster spot for the next few years for Carver HS.
