How far is the runner allowed to go away from the plate before he's called out?

I think as long as he's still trying to get to the plate, anything is fair game. However, if he walks back towards the dugout (no longer making an attempt to reach home), he forfeits the attempt to touch home and is considered out.

Similar to the "rounding first" rule. The runner can turn towards second as long as he doesn't "make a move" as though he's going to go to second. So, the runner can run through first, slow/stop, turn around to his left and come back to first at no risk. However, if he turns left and takes a hard step towards second, that's considered "making a move" and he's now at risk.
