Fact is all Smitty is pointing out is that he feels, as do I that Cohen overused the bunt, and the hit and run, which costs us outs and games. We have some free swingers and don't have the pitching to try and win 3-2 games. We MUST let the hitters swing and play for big innings. Our guys are so defensive at the plate and take too many pitches and swing at bad ones at times. It is just ****ing stupid to bunt in the first inning with a 0-0 score and the top of the lineup up!! Ok. Speed on the bases. Backup catcher. Guy that can handle the bat at the plate. The defense is going to be moving putting people out of position which opens holes. Easier to hit a ground ball thru the infield and stay out of 2 which if a FC our best hitter can hit. If ground ball get thru we win.

If guy swings and misses we will have runners in scoring position. Have to walk Spruill intentionally which brings up our best hitter with no where to put him and 1 out. Typical their closer is going to lay a 2-0 pitch in there or he wouldn't be their closer. Hence its a good gamble Spruill won't get a bad breaking ball and will get something he can handle and all of the aforementioned could very likely happen.

If he swings thru it most teams throw at the backside runner who happens to be our fastest guy. No one can fathom Robson getting his dumb ass thrown out.

You are the one that always says you can't judge by results. It's a good gamble with everything I explained. Not every time but in that particular situation with those particular people. I would say a perfect call. Didn't work bc Robson loafed.

Fans or anyone else telling Cohen not to bunt will never work. It will just make him that more insistent on proving it works and would lead to confirmation bias.

It's something he's going to have to figure out on his own.

Actually, it is a little complicated. While it can't be successfully argued, in general that bunting is better than swinging-away for producing 1-run, it absolutely can be argued a better solution in some instances. But to prove that statistically, one must use a formula that includes:

Team Batting Average
Team Slugging Percentage
Player Slugging Percentage
Sacrifice Bunting Efficiency

The resulting equation, in most cases, proves the batting option is best. But, there are absolutely circumstances where the math does back up the bunting option. It's just not usually the case. I think you're over-simplifying.
