It's pretty amazing how much we've grown in the last decade. Still got lots of work to do though.

Arkansas has just been killing it.

I wonder if that includes Jerry Jones' recent gift...I think he gave about $10 million to Arky.

ETA: I'm an idiot with a bad memory.

I wonder if that includes Jerry Jones' recent gift...I think he gave about $250 million to Arky.

I saw he gave 10+mil to the athletic dept. I haven't seen any gift of that size. Not saying he didn't, just that I haven't heard of it.

That's what I meant...my bad...I guess I thought he gave more in my mind.

We still have a lot of growing to do guys. Obviously we are growing big time. But still last in the SEC. I just wonder what we could do more at MSU if we just jumped up ahead of Ole Miss at #13.

Think about what little they do with $140 million more than what we put in per year. I can't even imagine what we would be as a university if we had $140 million more per year.

This doesn't make sense. These are total, overall, perpetual endowment numbers. Not "what is put in in a year". Technically, they "grew" $74 mil last year, while we "grew" $61 mil. But we still outpaced them in terms of percentage growth(the principle of having money to make money via accrued interest). Outpaced by 1.3% in this case.

Gotcha. I still wish we could increase that number and see what it is we could really push ourselves to. We are working our way towards that but we've still got a long ways to go.

As we increase enrollment and hopefully as we continue to put more graduates in better paying jobs this will help. Also, I don't think giving back to the university was promoted that terribly well when I graduated in 2010. Hopefully they are making strides on that.

Who does Arkansas have to compete with to get the donations?

How does an endowment grow? Can someone earmark money to go specifically to it?

Giving to the endowment can be an annual event, just like giving to the Bulldog Club. They will except money from just about anybody or entity. One factor that works in our favor is having alumni that have moved into CEO or CFO positions with either National or Global companies. (ie. Chevron) These companies will donate to specific colleges within MSU for better facilities, professors, and supplies. These companies recognize that with better prepared graduates, the better and more competitive their company would be by hiring from State. We have come along way with the expansions of different major and diverse degree offerings, but we have lots of room for improvement and have a long laundry list of needs.

However, with some schools, tobacco money goes along way. Hmmmmm. The world only needs so many lawyers.

Thanks for the info. Generally we have given to the MSU Foundation in the past, for the Infinite Impact program. Is this the same thing?

I don't know for sure about the Infinite Impact program, but any contribution to MSU in any way will always be appreciated. Plus, always check with MSU or whoever prepares your taxes for IRS benefits.

If our existing growth rates continue (28%/year for us, 14% for UM, 20% for SC), we'll pass both in just 3 years.

I realize they won't but, still.

When I initially found this database about 2 years back, I had us at 4-5 years away from passing Ole Miss. They've seen massive improvements the past 2 years though, as we only outpaced them by 1.3% this year.

Either way -- we've outpaced them in growth every single year in that database I'm pretty sure. If we can continue our growth pattern forward, we've got a future in the middle of the pack...

TAMU has oil money.
UT and a&m get money from the petroleum severance tax I believe. Plus they have some of their own wells on donated land etc.

Lots of land in the Permian basin was designated as land set aside for the university system. When oil was discovered, the system kept the mineral rights. So, the system schools get $$$! From oil revenue.

I agree. Growing the endowment should continue to be a priority. I'd love to see us get to $1 billion.

I think as our alumni continue to get into STEM industries and moving up, we're going to surpass several ahead of us. The graduates we produce will have a lot more luck finding jobs in almost any economical climate.
