Austin Kelly class of 2019, no joke. 8th grader from Washington School in the delta. 5-10 170 bats left, he is a catcher. Any of you know of him?

I have seen him play travel ball.....big time power at the plate......pitches, catches, and plays first......He is a Wes Rea body type. He looks 4 years older than everybody else.

I feel dirty posting stuff on a website about an 8th grader and surely wouldn't ever say anything negative.
With that said.....
I have heard from several people that is kid, as an 8th grader is legit....he is the best player at his age, hands down in this region. Plays for Snopek at PSA on his major team....these kids play at every major event they can get to and they win a lot. Will he develop? If he does, then we have a head start on him. Verbal offer and verbal commit, means nothing really.

O48 either knows him or probably fathered him

Things work pretty differently in baseball. Other teams don't actively recruit committed players, and if they do, it is rare. Baseball commitments "stick" at a pretty insanely high level.

That said, competition in baseball comes from MLB more than other teams...

I hope you are right but I guess what I mean is that - if this kid doesn't progress, his offer will disappear faster than you can say 17....just the way it works.

Seriously though, I have a buddy whose kid plays with this kid and he told me out of the blue last summer about this youn pg man...called him a "5 tool catcher" at 13....for what it's worth.

Would the coaches not offer if he wasn't any good? He will be 1# player in the state.

Remember also committed Luke Hancock, 9th grader/catcher, from Houston.....This kid is the real deal as well......

The first time we ever committed an 8th grader was Luke Alexander. That has worked out OK so far.

The thing about baseball players in high school- or junior high in this case- you have to understand that they are going to grow and develop and also understand that they grow at different rates. I remember A-Rod when he was in high school- he was dominating even though you could tell he hadn't filled out completely. That's what you are looking for.

I'm sure Cohen is looking at his bat speed as well as his actions in the field when they made the determination to offer him.

It's pretty unusual for an 8th grader to play varsity baseball even at a small school in Mississippi- I think that speaks well for Kelly also.

I heard he's hasn't gotten to 2nd base yet...
